Hi guys,

I was wondering what the year-round diving scene is like in NC. I don't really don't care about water temp, but, what's the vis and weather (winds/seas) like during the winter? Do most of the charter boats run all year.

I might be heading down to Oriental NC (near Hattaras) in late December and I was wondering if I should drag all my gear along. I'd be looking to do a variety of the well know wrecks (i.e U-boats and other subs) you guys are lucky enought to have. I have the book "Graveyard of the Atlantic" and it seems to imply that there is a dive season down there (not in the winter), waht's the deal?

Thanks.

Contact Outer Banks Diving. They run out of Hatteras Village. If the road get built back. Right now the island is still split just above Hatteras Village so there is no way to get to the southern part right now. The county and state are regulating who can go across and for how long. If the road gets built back John my be running some trips.

Oriental is a long ways from Hattaras (about 5 hrs travel no matter which way you go). You may want to look at the dive shops in Morehead City instead, maybe 1 hr or so away.

As to the weather, like NC always is, you can get really great days and really bad days with the only real difference being the air/water temp
.
Your best bet is to give to shops around Morehead a call. I don't know if any of them run out in the winter but if any of them do, any one of the shops can tell you who does.

I have just returned from two days of off shore wreck diving with Discovery out of Beauford NC. Sat and Sun Oct 4&5.
Summer finally made it,the vis was 50 to 80 ft and the coldest temp at 120 ft. was74.I had planed on just diving Sat but it was just too good to go home. Dove the U 352,Papoose,Schuz and the Aelous.Lots of fish,Sand Tigers and even Dolphins around the boat during our surface interval.
Good luck Tom
