At the suggestion of one of our members, I am posting something that I think would be a great idea for the GREAT Lakes Wrecking Crew. We are selling new flags. I have been selling these non-profit and will continue to, but.....

I would like to help at least one preserve keep our shipwrecks intact in the name of the GLWC if we can. Yes or no (I don't like polls either, but they are more effective for this type of thing), would the fellow wrecking crew members approve of marking up the flags to donate the extra to a preserve association in the Great Lakes (like the one in the Straits). If yes, please give us ideas which one and I will start another poll. If no, I will mark the flags at cost.

Thanks for your support,

Brian

How much are the flags Brian?

Brian,

I would not have a problem with adding a couple of bucks to all of our gear with the thought process that the extra money goes towards a wreck preservation project. We may even want to consider sending the extras to a different group with each order placed. I would normally spend as much as $20 for a t-shirt, so I would have no problem doing that for our t-shirts knowing that we are giving back to help preserve a hobby that we are so fortunate to be able to participate in. I say that after placing an order for 6 t-shirts, this may change my order a bit, but will not stop me from getting the shirts.

The fact that they are available is still hot off of the press. I don't have a price yet. Actually, I am with Mitten Diver, but I don't want to go pricing things too high for other people, so I just mentioned the flags.

Are there other preserves? I'm aware of the one up in the straights and bought their field guide last year... just dunno of any others...

Oh there are most definitely more preserves in Michigan! 9, 10 or 11 preserves depending on the current status of a couple of them becoming 'official'. Michigan is the leads the U.S. in the underwater preserve system.

In no particular order,
Keewenaw
Marquette County
Alger County
Whitefish Point
DeTour Passage
Straits of Mackinaw
Manitou Passage
Southwest Michigan
Thunder Bay
Thumb Area
Sanilac shores

The DeTour Passage and Southwest Michigan preserves may not be official although I think the SW Michigan one now is.

The best book I've seen on the preserve system itself along with details on individual preserves is '"ivers Guide to Michigan" by Steve Harrington. It also includes Federal & State diving laws, a wonderful glossary on ship 'parts' and sketches of several wrecks.

p.s. I'd be up for adding a small percentage to each item sold via the GLWC logo. Or even for some other form of fund raising. Perhaps, setting a buck aside for each dive made during the year or something like that.

I like this idea. Maybe we could have tags made up like the Dan tag or the new PADI submersable tag with the logo on it for a one time purchase. This could include the logo, your handle and maybe even a reference to the website.

I would also think that should investigate all of the states that make up our group on the scubaboard for the existence of underwater preserves as we are a very diverse group. We could vote on a preserve until eventually we would have donated to all of them in our area. This will obviously not happen all at once but maybe over a period of time.

I second what he said. Great idea.

I wouldn't say resounding, but the vote is yes. The next thing that I intend to do is ask for a list of Great Lakes Underwater Preserves (not just Michigan, fellow wreckers). Then we can rotate who gets the donation.

Does anyone know how we would go about making the tags? I love that idea, but they need to be pretty waterproof. I will be diving to 200 ft. by the end of the summer and plan on buying one!
