Wreck Diving between West Palm and Key Largo

Just starting to plan a dive trip for March, dive buddy and I are think 10 days total, with at least 5 in Key Largo the other 5 days diving between West Palm and Key Largo.

I have done a bunch of diving in the WPB/Jupiter area and also in Key Largo have done very little diving between the two.

So looking for advice on dive sites and operators, especially those who run “wreck” trips or at the very least are willing to when practical to drop us on a wreck instead of a reef.

We are both fledgling tec divers but for this trip would like to keep the diving to NDL.

Bonus points for operators who run 3 tank trips or who run two trips a day.

Stay a night or two in Lauderdale by the Sea and do a couple of shore dives. You could do a boat in the AM and get a couple shore dives in the PM. I like going in maybe 30 minutes before dusk and doing a long dive that becomes a night dive. LBTS has 3 reefs you can dive, the first starting around 75 yards out I believe. The American Dream II will take you on wrecks if you tell them that is your goal.

Pompano and Fort Lauderdale have some great wrecks to dive. I've been out with the following operators.

Scubatyme www.scubatyme.com or http://www.dive-dive-dive.com I've been out with the op a couple of times and they let a group of us pick the wrecks to dive because we were the first to make reservations. The dive site section of the web site has descriptions of wrecks and reefs. I personally have dove the RSB-1, Rebel, Ancient Mariner, Captian Dan and the Wreck Trek (the latter does not appear on the dive site description). All are worth diving at least once.

Pompano Dive Center Pompano Dive Center This op regularly puts wrecks on its dive schedule. I think they also might let you pick the site if you are first to make a reservation, though I am not completely sure about that.

South Florida Dive HQ Visit One of the "Top Ten" Scuba and Snorkel Dive Locations, Sunny Sourth Florida, with South Florida Diving Headquarters I've only done some of the beautiful shallow reefs with this op but they also go out to many of the wrecks. There are some good wreck dives out of Ft Lauderdale. We have used SeaXP several times. Like Ron says, do some shore diving at Lauderdale by the Sea.
Force E Divers usually has a group dive at the Blue Heron Bridge. I have heard that they have spotted seahorses.

Print this and laminate it at Kinko's and I think even I could find my way around.

The Spiegel Grove in Key Largo is a great wreck dive with lots of operators taking divers. Rainbow Reef in Key Largo has free guides so that saves some money and makes sure you see the best parts of the wreck most efficiently. I also like the folks at Ocean Divers.

There are plenty of wrecks of all skill levels for you to check out on your trip. Make sure you do the Vandenburg in Key West. We went out with Subtropic Scuba but their website now redirects to seaduction.com I think it is the same operation. They have a two tank trip to the Vandenburg for $85. It is a good value. We did this dive for ou4r dive #26 and #27 and came up on another boats line due to ripping currents on our first dive. The second dive went smoother. Call ahead and get the guide for the most fun.

Same location but different owners: I recall earlier this year, a group of tech divers purchased Subtropic's operation and renamed it. When they bought the dive shop/operation they announced they'd have one boat used primarily for recreation and one for tech. If I recall, the new owners had been long time customers of Subtropic.

The Speigle Grove (sp?) is a great dive in Key Largo: the Duane (sp?) is also interesting.
