Americans are too short sighted to look into the future to see the eventual real cost.Americans don’t want to pay the higher prices US made goods would cost. I seek out US made goods whenever I can and the cost is significantly higher.
Part of the problem for US manufacturing are environmental restrictions, there are unions to deal with, medical coverage, retirements-pensions, paying a livable wage, etc. Farming out everything to China eliminates all that. That’s how we’re getting all the cheap crap at the dollar store and Walmart/Target. But all it has done is driven consumerism to a hyper level. Back when appliances were made here they were expensive but they lasted a very long time. There are blenders and mixers from the 1950’s that are still around and they still work! And you could get parts for them if needed.
Now the Chinese crap breaks down after a few years and ends up in a landfill because there are no parts, you just buy another one because they are cheap enough. How is this sustainable? How much of this garbage ends up in a landfill? It’s staggering!
