I agree with rjack. Every step of the way past singles diving doubles your costs. First, you need double the tanks, bands, manifold, wing, maybe a different plate, and harness, regs, hoses...then double the cost of service for that equipment, and fills...and all of a sudden with that much gas, NDLs creep up on you quickly and you're paying even more for nitrox...all of this before you even touch tech...

You also mention you'll be traveling with your gear; chances are you won't be traveling with doubles gear. Until you get to a point where you're not scrimping for cash for each upgrade, I say stick with diving singles, and only move on to doubles/tech if get bored of the dives available to you.

I was never scrimping on gear, just looking for the best stuff for me at the best value.

So thi morning I ordered a Diverite Classic 360, Apeks wtx3, Al backplate and single piece harness. Top that off with a long hose and a pair of Apeks DS4 1st stages and I'm nearly there.

Obviously I can't travel with cylinders so the bands/manifolds/cylinders aren't an issue, I don't dive at home so no point. Hence also needing to be able to dive a single when doubles aren't available. I think this set up should take up less room and weight than my rec gear so pretty happy with the choice so far.

Now there's just the stage bottle mounting and reg I think and things are getting started nicely.

I'm going to replace my jacket bcd with a wing, and really want one that can be adapted to both single or doubles as I don't want to travel with both.

I like the Halycon Evolve, but if I go for that I'll need to buy the eclipse wing also in order to dive a single. That's going to be not only expensive but more cumbersome in travel luggage.

Does anyone know of any out there with the lightweight backplate that will adapt to both singles and doubles. I saw an OMS wing with that but then bungied and I'm not really into bondage ;) I intend to go toward cave diving so sturdy single bladder and uncluttered is the way for me.

Advice welcome :) Thanks.

Don't use a doubles wing for single tanks. It's not a good idea.

Deep Sea Supply makes a very lightweight backplate made out of Kydex. I've seen them in person, and they are pretty nice.
