Glad I found this thread. I am trying to mate a Transpac to a 40 lb. Oxy Mach V and it's been driving me nuts. When I tried weaving the standard cam bands through the webbing and around my 8" diameter tanks, they weren't long enough. So I figured I needed extra long cam bands. While I was waiting for those to arrive, I figured out that the cam bands can not be threaded properly through the Oxy and the Transpac.

Looks like I need to pick up a STA and bolt this whole setup together.

When using a STA, are the DiveRite or Oxycheq sex bolts strong enough to support a LP 95 w/ a back mounted 30 cu. ft. pony?

I use the Dive Rite STA with the included wing nuts setup. It's strong enough to support my monster Faber HP120 tank with ease.

...last fall I built my dive buddy that exact same set up (Transpac with 40 lbs Oxycheq Mach V Extreme wing).....I'm a big fan of those Apollo Bio Lock tank straps, so I used those on her rig....and installed an Oxycheq SS STA....'bolted' everything together and just ran the 2 tank straps through the STA 'slots'. (her 'old' Scubapro tank straps weren't long enough to be used in this application...which was her first choice, so I went with the Apollo ones, which I like better anyway.)

Hi everybody,

I know this thread is a little old but i'm having a similar problem trying to mate the Oxycheq Mach V with my Apeks WTX harness (very similar to the TransPac).

I know that I'll need a STA to get it to work but my question is does the STA need a backplate to bolt onto or just the harness should be enough to hold the weight of the tank? That is my only concern at this point.

I really don't need (nor want) a backplate at this point and I'm quite happy with the WTX. If the only way to get the STA on is with the backplate i'll probably return the oxycheq and get an oms or hog wing (which are a bit larger).

Your insight would be greatly appreciated!

I've got about 50 dives on my setup this season and the harness is enough. I am strapping on a LP-95 with a 30 cu. ft. pony bottle and no problems at all.

When using a softpac, it should not be necessary to use any STA. The idea is to strap the tank directly to the softpac and the whole assembly is straped to your body.

The STA is meant to be bolted on a hard backplate to stabalise the single tank and so would be useless on a softpac.

The TP has cam band slots that are about 6" apart, wings like the oxy Mk 5 & DSS line have cam band slots that are about 3" apart. Most tanks are between 5" & 8" in diameter. You can't get enough tension on the bands to hold the tank securely & if you can put enough pressure on the cam bands you will rip the centre panels out of the wing.

The best way is to choose a wing with a wide enough centre panel to go with the TP.
The Deepoutdoors 18lbs "airstream wing" fits perfectly on the TP2. I know because I'm using this setup.

The other way is to cut slots in the centre panel of the wing to suit the particular softpac model.

I'll try again. The centre panel of some wings is only about 3" wide. You can cut slots in it wherever you like, they still won't be wide enough to use cam bands on a TP.

Some prefer a more streamlined wing. According to many, an STA works fine with such wings & a TP.
