I've been an active NAUI Rec Instructor for many years, as well as an avid Tech diver (Cave, Trimix, CCR). My one regret has always been that my wife has always had an almost irrational fear of the water. This summer, something has changed. She expressed an interest this spring in finally learning to dive.
I have taken her snorkeling in Panama City, Key Largo, Cozumel, and the Blue Heron Bridge over the last couple of years. This has slowly built up her confidence and piqued her interest in taking the next step.
Today, after several easy acclimation dives in the kiddie pool at St. Andrews State Park, we reached a new plateau. While diving in about 6 feet of water, we got through mask clearing and weight belt ditching. I am ecstatic, and so is she!
Understand, we are taking a nontraditional approach to this. We have lots of time, and she certainly isn't paying me! Slow and easy, we'll go at her pace. But this is exciting for me! I would rather dive Molasses Reef with her than do a 265' CCR dive in the Eagle's Nest.
If any of y'all have mates on the fence, there is hope! Wife and dive buddy - how cool is that?!
