I have a number of manta reels I rarely use. I always carry a spool. The spool won’t corrode. The spool won’t break. It will come unclipped.
Have you ever had a manta reel break? Or rats nest?

Break, no.

Rats nest, yes/no.

I have had 3 of mine tangle. Usually the line wraps around the center bolt while winding. Mostly due to my negligence winding them in. They are not infallible. Great design but will mess up when the operator does.

I think you should do what makes you happy. Ultimately it's round and holds the appropriate amount of line for what you need. Why bother. I have both, I prefer the delrin. But that doesn't mean I don't use the stainless one. The stainless ones is thinner. Therfore takes up less space in my pocket. They both work as intended.

So you guys think I should return the SS spool and replace it with a delrin/plastic?
I like my Delrin reel. The price was right, someone left it on the boat.

You know, I wouldn't really care much, but as I'm sure everyone knows DGE will bend over backwards to make customers happy so if there's a significant benefit from one over the other than I'd just assume do it now. I sold off a bunch of dive gear over the winter and so I'm trying to avoid the dive gear collection box that seems to plague divers.

to save $10 I'm not sure it's worth the hassle of sending it back. You can always use it for something else if you find you don't like it. Spools are good to keep around, but if you are buying new ones, I'd get plastic

You should see some of the stuff I have laying around. Makes me wonder what I was thinking taking this up as a hobby. Every year I sell some at the swap meet. Then take the cash and buy more. It's a vicious cycle...

Spools are always good to have. If I were you I'd order another one, in delrin, and try them both and see which you prefer. Then keep the other one as a backup, or a vacation laundry line, or tying up petulant children. They're very versatile tools.
