Why rock bottom is called "rock bottom"

Just a thought - why it's called "rock bottom"?

Any good reason? My dictionary shows that "rock bottom" means also "unhappy" but somehow my limited English doesn't allow me to make it out. of course except the simple fact that OOA makes you unhappy

"wood bottom", "ice cream bottom", etc. just don't give the same sense of urgency.
Just my opinion....
