One day I was snorkeling off Barbados, and I looked over saw a group of divers staying where they were, and I knew I had to go to the surface for more air. I thought "this is totally unfair".... and the rest as they say is history. I came home immediately signed up for lessons, and now I'm a Divemaster.

I always loved the water since I was a kid. My parents let me take a PADI SCUBA course at a college when I was 14 years old and I passed it (pool & written test) but there were no dive shops within over 100 miles or any lakes to take my open water training dives (I lived in farm country) so I had to forget about it. Fourteen years later this past summer I just got the huge urge to SCUBA dive again so I got certified this past summer and now I'm a SCUBAfreak. I bought all new gear this past fall and plan to dive a lot once the ice is off the lakes! :D

Why I started - a ski buddy suggested it as a summer holiday
Why I continue - well I guess the same as you all, I adicted!!! Problem is now I find it tough to go skiiing.......

Answer to question #1: Because it's there.
Answer to question #2: Because it's there.

Seriously though, main reason I took up diving was because it didn't make much sense to have "dive debriefings" (beer,:cheers:food,:lunch:belly laughs,:haha: in that order) w/o going diving.

My folks had me swimming in the backyard pool when I was just a wee lad. Grew up looking at Lake Superior every day, 1000 small little lakes and rivers all around. I knew there had to be some fun to be had underneath those waters!. Was never a fisherman, but I loved to play in the water. Did a bit of snorkelling, and we were always boating or playing around the water. Finally a friend who I never thought would be interested in scuba, said he was going to take a coarse to get certified. That got me wanting to go too. Now, my only regret is that I didn't start earlier!

When I was 17 (1967) it was for adventure.

When I was working in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia,(1979) It was because I could dive in the Red Sea almost any time I wanted. This was also the reason I gave the sport up after I moved, nothing compared.

Now it's to introduce my kids to the sport and it makes a good excuse to go to exotic locales 2/3 times a year.

Grew up on farm with lake frontage and naturally spent lots of time on the water in summers fishing and in the water swimming. I read lots of Jacques Cousteau material and other divers as well. Got into skin diving and went scuba with cousin when I was about 15. Time and circumstances managed to interrupt plans for certification until last summer.

Friends/neighbours had certified locally and recommended the course; as a result, me, my wife, 17 year old and 15 year old son all got certified OW. Plan is for 14 year old daughter to take course as well.

It is much better than I remember due largely to the quality and quantity of gear available now when compared to 1975 or so.

I'm in for good now, will be upgrading skills and certification as soon as possible next year and going forward.......

When my daughter was 14 (in 1976), a neighbor had just learned to dive and told my daughter about it. She wanted to learn and I made an idle promise: she could learn when she was 16. Two years later, on the evening of her 16th birthday, I was reminded of my promise, reinforced by a Japanese exchange student living with us who also wanted to learn, so I was stuck.

One visit to the dive shop was all it took to convince me to sign up for lessons, too. I couldn't image myself leaving two 16 year-old girls there alone with all that testosterone running loose.

It took about a year, but I got hooked on diving. Diving Daughter and I still travel regularly to dive together. Two weeks in Fiji are on tap for July.

My wife was looking for something unique to give me for our 10th anniversary back in 1999:

- Her first idea was sending me to the 2000 NCAA hoops final 4 -- I said no (too much $$$)

- Her next idea was something else I had always wanted to try -- signing me up for a course at Skip Barber Racing school at Lime Rock Park in CT. Prior to signing up, I drove out to the track to make sure I could fit into the open wheel Indy-type cars they have.....despite the best efforts of their chief mechanic (changing pedal and seat configs), I wouldn't fit. My legs were just too long.

- Soon thereafter I was swimming with my kids at the local YMCA in my town and I noticed a BOW course flier....the rest is history!
