The other day I was returning from picking up some dinner and a fool in a minivan decided that they were more important than everyone else and went thru the red light I was sitting at. I just don't understand why??? Do some people enjoy auto crashes? Do they like paying tickets? Just a bit frustrated.

They run red lights b/c the yellow lights aren't long enough...

Its starting to become so common to see people running lights in this county that I have began to question the validity of even having some sort of non human regulatory system. Just as common is traffic sitting in an intersection. Hopefully we'll get a new sheriff this year who has an interest in public safety more so than just staffing desks.

Just as common is traffic sitting in an intersection.

The Brits have "exclusion zones" at many intersections. If you enter the intersection without enough room in the traffic flow to clear the zone, there is a significant fine to deal with.

I have large doubts as to the wisdom of many other British traffic law and enforcement "innovations" of the last 10 years but this one works well.

That would be a great thing to implement here! I saw a sign at one of the intersections posting the fine for blocking the intersection to the whole whopping tune of $68 and some change. Not is that sign ignored by the drivers, but it has yet to be enforced by any enforcement agency that I have seen actually in the area.

It's funny, when I was a kid growing up, we did some stupid things. ( I won't list them here... but they were bad ) but one thing we never did was run red lights.

These days I think redlight running is a combination of 2 things:

1) Stress of modern day traffic. It takes people incredible amounts of time and patience to fight for hour(s) to go 10-30 miles and when you hit a light turning yellow you can't help but to think that your going to add another 5 minutes to your already miserable commute if you don't "make" that light

2) In response to #1 law enforcement has stepped up enforcement. This typically results in camera systems and adjustment of the yellow time to entrap as many people as possible to show that they are doing their job with law enforcement.

I always thought it would be fun to have this wall come up at the stop line when the lights turned red. "cha CHING" WHACK (as the car trying to run the light, hits the wall) That would do 2 things....1. get people to stop BEHIND the STOP line and 2. Stop people from running red lights!! HAHA!! But I'm evil that way!

Why do people run red lights indeed...

A few years ago they came out with this radical new development, called "anit-lock brakes". Everyone knew this was the answer to all questions. Insurance companies even reduced their rates for cars so equipped.

Recently I read a report by one of the larger insurance companies, which found NO difference between cars with AL brakes and those with conventional brakes. None.

Apparently, the technology addressed the wrong end of the problem. As it is with Scuba diving so it is with driving... the user makes the difference between safety and injury.

i have to agree with you 100% there sir. 4 years ago i was stopped at a red light when a driver came from behind me and i guess he forgot to put his foot on the break pedal, at least not soon enough. i was injured and as far as i know, he wasnt.

We have a few intersections where a similar sign is posted, and a camera takes pics of cars/drivers that violate. The owner of the car gets a citation in the mail.
