Well so far my observation of the England's Euro 2004 progress has all been online. During the year Fox Sports World shows a good number of Premiership football matches and must have some kind of following with the ex-pats over here. I have access to this through digital cable, although you can get it on one of the satellite networks. So far in the 6 games played in the group that England was in for the first round, they showed all the other 3 matches except any that involved England. They showed Switzerland/Croatia, France/Switzerland and France/Croatia, England played all three of the other teams, but there wasnt a single one televised!!!! FSW also showed a bunch of other matches from the other 3 groups, not sure if there was favouritism there either, but those i am not so concerned about.

Now England are in the quarter-finals against the hosts Portugal. There is only one match on that day and FSW have not posted it as a game they will show - again, this thursday. I saw plenty of the world cup matches, but this competition is hardly covered on a channel with bases its viewing on sports that arent as popular in this country (football - MSL, European and S American, rugby, Aussies rules i believe as well as others) - it just surprises me that they arent showing those matches.

I sympathize! In Japan I can't watch it either - Sky doesn't have it (thanks Murdoch) - nor any Japanese channels except one satellite - which I don't have the decoder for. I tried to get it but they said it would take two weeks to deliver tha decoder!!!!! As that was day one of the competition when my wife realized that we could have had it - it was too late. I think it sucks!!!

Kim, your time is even more off from them than mine. The games here start between noon and 3pm, there i can only imagine something around 3-6am (as a guess).

It has nothing to do with Fox Sports World, Simon -- rather, it has to do with the company that owns the broadcast rights to Euro 2004, Setanta. They are fully aware that England are one of the most popular teams in the world (believe it or not) and they're not about to let a chance to make money from the Three Lions' games get away. The fact that they're showing the other matches from that group is a feeble attempt at benevolance, as far as I'm concerned. Once the quarterfinals and semifinals are here, FSW will be allowed to show them on a five-day delay, and the final on a three-day delay...

However, having said that, I went to an Irish pub in Dallas yesterday, paid my $20 cover charge that Setanta is making them collect, and watched the England-Croatia match with several other England supporters. I had an absolute blast!! We cheered all afternoon long as Roones recorded his two goals, Scholesy finally got off the schneid and Lampard put the match on ice. I'm going back on Thursday to watch them play Portugal.

BTW, at 1:45pm (2:45pm your time), FSW is showing the Sweden-Denmark match live, which should be another thriller.

I will have to find more pubs that do that around here - there is a huge population of ex-pats here. I thought it might be something to do with the broadcast rights, but i thought that FSW would pay the fees to get a whole bunch of people watching. I have two decent options around here for the matches, but one of them last week when i asked said they were showing it with a 3 hour delay - by which time i had seen it online whilst at work.

tell me about it!!!
I talked to my cable company to get the matches and they were all on payper view at $20 a pop- as noted above, they know us Brits will pay for foootie, so they cream us for all the cash- of course they show the matches no one will pay for.....

all we have to hope now that England are in the quarter finals for the first time is that the thugs don't cause trouble and get us banned before game time.

The timing REALLY sucks here in Sydney - lots of matches are around 4-5am - too late to stay up for and to early to get up for on a school night!

I got to watch two games at once yesterday. I was in the departure lounge in Cancun a full two hours before departure after sailing through a check in that took about 15 minutes total.

A sole TV at the one end of the bar was tuned to the France-Switzerland game with no takers. The other TV's in the bar area were all tuned to the England-Croatia match. I had the pleasure of watching it with about 400 Brits all waiting for their 2 planes to load up to go home to Manchester. It was pretty quiet for the first 40 minutes except for the occasional groan as opportunities were missed as Croatia led by a goal. Then Scholes' header sent the place into bedlam. A few minutes later Rooney's effort again sent the place wild. The beer really started flowing then. Once indentified as a fan who actually knew what was going on and a fellow Commonwealth citizen, I had a few rounds bought for me as well. :D

Unfortunately I had to board my flight back to Ft. Lauderdale shortly after the second half started. But those two planes were full of happy fans flying home to Manchester after their holiday that night.

Being in Mexico for the past few days was a delight as every day there was two matches being played every afternoon in every bar. A great excuse to get out of the afternoon sun.
