Why are scuba resorts sold out months in advance in Cozumel?

I planned to book my dive trip for late March with my LDS but they told me SCC in Cozumel is sold out already. How far in advance do I need to book hotel and scuba dive reservations for Caribbean and Cozumel? I am bummed because now I don't know where to scuba dive and stay in late March/April. Any ideas how to plan better?

Actually, I'm glad to hear that SCC is getting a lot of business; things on the island have been very slow for a long time. But there are scads of great places to stay on Cozumel and plenty of excellent dive ops. Not to worry, you'll be fine.

We planned on Bonaire, but switched to Coz to save money when I got lucky with the last booking at Blue Angel for our dates this spring break. We stayed at Casa Deja Blue last year and it was excellent, nice and clean at a good price. We would return, but this year we wanted to be right on the water, hence BA. I'm sure there is rooms to be found, try checking the smaller places.

It's called Spring Break.

Those take 8 months to a year in advance.

When you consider Cozumel attracts divers from around the world I wouldn't imagine it would take that many LDS groups of 20 to 40 divers to quickly fill up the dive operations and that doesn't include all the people that travel on their own. I know I've been there a couple times when very large groups of 40 or more from one dive shop have shown up.

Plus CZM has always been known as one of the first destinations new divers go to either complete their Open Water cert (if you live in a cold climate) or first dives after getting certified. Back in the day Grand Cayman used to be the first stop but not sure any more as now a days everything over there seems to be gold plated (or they think it is)..

After reading Ben's thread.. I began to wonder what the capacity is on Cozumel for divers (not tourists but divers). Anyone know what the max amount of divers CZM can handle (or a close number). I would be curious to find out if maybe Dave D. or Christi or anyone with the knowledge knows.

SCC is not a big destination for spring break... .it is a scuba resort, not a party resort. It is also not huge, so there are times when it is sold out months in advance, especially if groups book.
If you really want to stay at SCC, then I would ask about a different week. We use Island Dreams Travel to book our trips there. Send them an e-mail or call, and they will get back to you within 24 hours on availability.

Ben: how many rooms were you trying to get at SCC? We booked 2 weeks ago for April 7-14 at SCC but we are just one couple. When we were there Jan 7-14 we wanted to keep our room for the day because we had a 9pm flight home and were told "No sorry we are fully booked." That's good to hear. Sort of. We plan on booking Jan 2013 when we are there in April to hopefully get the room we like.

The bottleneck just might be with your LDS. Might look at other ways to book if you want to go to SCC.

Right Don. I was just re-reading the original post and thought maybe I read it wrong. Ben was trying to go with his LDS.

Ben: Not required. Go by yourself and meet more people. We've booked April 7-14 but was told all weeks in April were open. We picked what we did as this was the only week I could get the direct flight from Toronto.
