Need to back up here before I get beat up for the wrong reasons...

Some of the best divers I have "divered" with (new word) were women. Great boyancy and air consumption. My point (less the humor) is about what is stopping most from trying it in the first place. It seems to be a mixture of fear, conditions in the water and the physical requirements. On the last, it may be that some women "think" they can't do it, when in fact most could.

I am, of course, stepping outside of my gender comfort zone with such statements, but all things being equal...in my experience...the better recreational divers seem to be women tho the sheer number of men is higher.

p.s. "lobsterer": one who traps lobsters?

Most(not all) of the lady divers I know are...ummm....well they have no interest in guys.

They might be interested, but it is like when you are facing a junk yard dog--the moment you show any fear you are done for!!! We have to pretend we have no interest to survive! LOL If we figure out that you are harmless or a knight in shinning armour, we might let our guard down and re-sheth our dive knife!:D

Kim,

That's rather interesting. Is diving marketed differently in Japan?
I don't think so. It's a product of the social changes that are happening here. Less younger women are getting married and they get quite adventurous with their (quite high/office ladies) disposable incomes. Guys on the other hand are still pretty much expected to work really hard, and long hours, for the 'man'. (salary men)
It's happening in a number of areas. You often see groups of ladies getting into stuff now, going out together etc.

I think most men want a play mate.

I know a lot of women that think men want a woman with nice shoes and window treatments.

Babies make it tough for a bit, like Pete said.
...and Jon is correct also. same reason they golf.
and hunt and fish..

same thing seems to be true in motorcycling....I am always outnumbered, but when you find someone who enjoys what you enjoy, how could you not love him even more:eyebrow:

I don't think the tank size/weight is the killer in the deal for women. Several say after classes or after diving in the tropics for the first time they don't like the clunky, awkward feeling on land that cool water diving requires.

And I'll be the first to admit I whined like a 4year old when I added a 40cuft sling bottle to the kit. :D

I do hate all the lugging and gear you have to carry on land--I could do without that in a heart beat!

However... I have NEVER met a woman on a dive boat who has a male significant other who doesn't dive.

I met my wife on a dive boat. Over the years working in diving I've met many single women on dive boats. BUT overall I'd agree, probably 85% of the time the boat is full of all men or couples. I wonder how it compares to other outdoor activies like biking, hiking, surfing, whitewater sports, etc? I'd bet it's a similar distribution.

Leah, I agree with your dislike of gear-hauling. My wife would never ask for help lugging her gear, but I do help out b/c I am stronger.

The 'junk yard dog' comment was pretty funny!, although it seems to me that most dudes who dive (at least recreationally) are pretty laid back. I think there's a lot less machismo in diving than some people think. Maybe there's alot of that in tech diving, but I don't know.

Oh, just get one of us stupid men to do it....You know we will!!!! Just promise to send a get well card after we get out of hernia surgery...

On that note: I am convinced a scuba "ski lift" would make money....A couple of hundred dollars, dynamite some coral out of the way and let the lifting begin! We could use coal or some marginally safe nuclear source to power it. Whose with me????

Great Idea! We could always just steal the nukes from Iran, or steal it from the Libyans like they did in 'Back To The Future' - 1.21 Gigawats :light:
