If Halcyon ever begins manufacturing regulators I sure hope they are of better quailty than those of their recent manufacture..

sherwood shadow + can be disconnected from your bc and still function. it's a complete 2nd stage w/purge and it breathes good even at depth(didn't need it, just testing it out) the good part is you use your existing inflator buttons .i've had mine for two years and i like it a lot.

An alternate air source is generally not for my need, but for another diver who has run out of air (duh). New divers often panic when this happens and grab whatever regulator they can get to -- often your main regulator.

With an AIR2 you can quickly hand them your main regulator and grab the AIR2 quickly -- while watching the panicked diver continuously, until they calmdown. So the real virtue of it is that it's easier for you to get to in a panic and watch him. It's unlikely the other diver will grab it, because he wants max air now and will go for your best regulator.

This for me is a more persuasive argument for the AIR2 than "there's one fewer hose", but obviously divers have been using both types of alternate air sources for years. The main thing is to be proficient with the switchover, like a habit, so you don't have to think about it when a panicked diver loses it and reaches for your air (the life you save could be your own).

The AIR2 is only a so-so regulator, about equivalent to an R180, but properly maintained will do the job for emergencies just fine.

This is the argument that DIR use and the reason they equip their primary with a 7 foot hose and bungee the octo under the chin. With just a regular length hose, if he's that panicked, you're going to be a lot closer than I'd like to be. I have a slightly longer (36") hose on my octo and the extra few inches make maneuvering when sharing air a lot easier. I remember the "adventure" of buddy breathing in my OW course and swimming with your buddy while he's got your primary was very close quarters indeed.
