Hi everybody!

I'm a new poster, and a new diver as well. I did my advanced open water diver certification last summer and I'm looking for a good value in a dive trip. This looks like it might be it! :-)

I'm coming from Kansas City so I haven't been able to dive in salt water. Lakes only so far. I've always been fascinated by coral reefs and the fauna that inhabits them so this sounds like a dream come true for me.

But since I've never been to Cozumel (or anywhere else) on a dive trip I do have a few questions.

#1, the big one. I'll probably be traveling by myself. My wife won't dive with me (claims she's claustrophobic and won't even try scuba) so will there be a problem finding a dive buddy?

Will weights be provided by the dive charter? I hope they won't expect us to bring our weights? Tanks will be provided? Will a camera rental be available?

Thanks for any replies, the first trip is pretty intimidating. There are more questions that will arise I'm sure.

Cozumel is a great trip for your 1st time in salt water as most of the diving is drift diving. Very easy and relaxing. The marine life is wonderful as well.

You'll have no problem finding a dive buddy with a big group like this. And your wife is welcome to come along. We have quite a few nondivers that are going to stay behind either enjoying the hotel or exploring the Island.

Weights and tanks are provided. And yes cameras are available to rent.

If you have any other questions, just let us know. We would love to have the 2 of you join us.

I wondered where this thread went?

Smit, Cozumel is great diving, this is a great group, a great trip, great first time in the ocean - go for it. I often caution first time ocean divers going to Coz to hire a private DM for the first day, but with these folks to dive with - may not be needed at all. Asking an experienced diver to buddy with a newbie is a bit much to ask perhaps, but some may volunteer - or if not, then maybe.

Take your land camera for sure, and spare cards unless you take a laptop for daily downloads. Some would say to learn to dive the ocean first, then later dive with a camera - but since they have them for rent, you can play that day by day.

Have a great trip! :pilot:

Don't worry about a dive buddy. I am sure you will be able to find someone to watch you back and you theirs. The diving is world class!!!!

The way the experience works is really wonderful. Once on the boat, the dive masters will be sure you have your weights, tanks are on the boat. When the boat gets to whatever particular reef for that dive its a controlled jump in. Generally folks dive in mini groups. Families with families, couples with couples. Drift diving rocks. If you see something as your drifting by and want a closer look just fin on over.

Bottom line, this is an incredible value for some of the best diving in the world with fantastic accommodations and dive operation. You will not be disappointed.

I'm traveling by myself so far. There's an outside chance that a buddy of mine will go with me, but even if my friend does go he won't be diving so I don't have a dive buddy. I wouldn't worry about it much since you'll be making friends quickly and I'm always glad to dive with new divers if you're up to diving with me. I'll even share my room! :D

Wow!!! Will even share your room?? lol. This is my kind of party!

Originally I signed up to go on this trip as a solo single gal but managed to talk another girlfriend into coming along! I have never dove with her but we have excellent communication skills with one another when we are riding our motorcycles, so I have no doubt that diving together will be great.

To the fellow who posted up about being a newbie and not having a dive buddy, this trip couldn't be more perfect for you. You'll be matched with a buddy for sure and Cozumel is beautiful! I have only had two dives there before (when a cruise ship stopped) but it was my first experience with drift diving and it was both sooooooo relaxing and fun, you don't even have to kick if you want. Just kick back and chill and watch the show so to speak. I am so excited about going that I am staying in Cozumel for a 2nd week by myself (when my friend heads home) at another resort. Just a change of scenery and whatnot, but again dives included in the price. These packages that Al is providing for us are amazing - $850 for a week including accommodation, food/drinks, and diving?! That's NUTS!!!! In a very good way.

This should be a wickedly fun vacation, all of you seem to have terrific personalities so it'll be fun times above and below water. It just can't come soon enough! :)

Another one here chiming in on no buddy. I am traveling with my teen and sister. Sister doesn't dive, teen is bringing equipment, but not scheduled on any boat dives. I hadn't even thought of the buddy issue when booking for the trip! There are so many people going, of all skill levels, that finding a buddy is not a big deal.
So, for those that are on the fence about coming because they don't have a buddy yet, come on! the water's warm and the rum is flowing! :D
