You can spear Red Snapper, same size and creel limit(which will be limited to two shortly - currently at 4) as reel fishing.

Capt. Pat Green and and some of the other local spear o's there in PC swear the bulls know the sound of the strum of a speargun band going off. It brings them in like a dinner bell. I haven't had the chance to dive over there yet myself. Oh one other thing I was told they are starting to see more and more Hogfish at some of the sites. It would be nice to see them move on over this way some

They had a photo at Dive Locker from a recent dive with 3 nice hogs that were landed on the boat.

How do you measure total length under water, or do you have some catch and release secrets for fish after you have put a spear through their head?

You don't shoot anything close to the size limit until you are better at guaging size while UW and at a distance.

Comes with experience.

My experience is that the sharks are always on the wrecks hunting. When I have been first in the water,..I have seen them circle at a distance, just in and ouot of sight/vis. When you start spilling blood and having fish making wounded movements they come in. I had oneget appear within 15 feet of me when I had a stringer tangled around my fins. When I got tangle out and moved a few feet away the shark came in and took the strnger like a hungrey dog.

What does that have to do with judging size underwater? LOL

Sharks are everywhere in the Gulf, you'd be a fool not to know that.

I have had a lot of old SpearO’s tell me to carry my stringer at my side never on a leash that way you can keep the fish between you and the tax collector. Having it dangle below you there is very little you can do to the key word here is to poke off the shark. And think about it a second which would you rather have putting up a defense with the shark straight on or having it come up from your fins?

There are many that will put markings on the gun to try and go by to help with sizing but for me I never could get one to hold still for me to lay my gun out on them :D to measure them. Like Mat said it come with time. Just pick one you know is twice the length for awhile and work from there. Working on shot placement will also help you start judging better size of your fish at lease it dose for me.

There are many old spearo’s that hang in the hunting forums of the site Chad, John, and a few other deep tech fisherman. Gary (Gulf Diver ) also slings some pretty mean steel

This summer once in awhile we all need to start getting together once in awhile and do some fishing trips
