I would also add a light weight STA. DiveRites and Oxycheq light weight stays are ~1/8 in thick and ~ 8 to 12 oz.

The Dive Rite Aluminum backplate says it doesn't need an STA - would the tank be substantially more stable with one?

Thanks,

Bob

I think it's the wing that doesn't need the sta not the plate.

And yes, I feel the sta does add more stability.

If you've got the Dive Rite backplate and the Oxycheq wing, the slots line up so you can set it up all without an STA. The Mach V has little rods sewn in that keep the tank in place.

I only ever use an STA if I'm going to be switching between single and doubles a lot, as I find it easier to undo a couple of bolts, rather than adding and removing the cam bands all the time.

Oh yeah. There is that too. I drilled my aluminum and plastic diverite plates to accommodate the Halcyon MC storage pac,

That's something I would never do. Alu needs to be anodized to prevent corrosion. Why drill when you got emergency deployment systems like from OMS or deep out doors?

Clean and rinse well, and in-between dive trips buff and polish with a wax for say mag wheels. Should ward off corrosion just fine.

My gear sometimes goes for a week without touching fresh water... Any dent, scratch n major corrosion will happen.

So I take this as another major pro for SS plates?

I don't think most AL plates are anodized. I've seen a few colored ones that must have been, but your typical AL plate is not. Mine do get some marks on them from salt water, but it's nothing like rust on steel.

Well, the plate only cost me ~ $50.00 US. I rinse in fresh water after every dive and never saw any deal breakers when I remove the pocket. I do that every time I change wings (easier to remove the sex bolts from 2 sides) and I kind of buff any oxidation with with turtle wax.

I have one of the Deep Outdoors storage things and don't like it on my belt. I burned mounting holes for my plate and used it as well as bungee loops and the DiveRite sleeves. Between my plate and my back is what I prefer.

OMS has a combo pad and pocket which I did not consider because:
1. I don't want or need padding.
2. I don't know if the pocket has a closure.
3. Since I had a DiveRite plate, I didn't know if the OMS would fit without drilling.

The Halcyon, I held in my hand and knew it was good. I took my plate to the LDS and used a Halcyon plate as a template on my DiveRite.

OMS also has that double stack under the plate holder. Way too bulky for me And as I said, I prefer the marker between my plate and my back. Not at my butt. My single wings are donuts and the inflated wing kind of squeezes a marker under the plate into my body.

The oxidation I see, I always assumed was from dissimilar metals. My DiveRite plate is "black".
