I have to agree with Jim, The dive operation at Sunset has a very nice bunch of people working for them.

Thanks again to both you and Jim. I will do a little more research on Sunset house. Will let you know what I decide. If anyone else has any suggestions I am still open to them We are traveling June 5-12.

So tell me what your suggestions are? I am open to anything at this point

Well, We've stayed at Turtle Nest Inn, really nice rooms and being over in Boddentown it's quite peaceful and quiet. Downside is that it is a ways away from Georgetown and you'd have to drive to wherever ya want to go. But, it would put you in a position to go dive both the west and east sides without too much problem.

Sunset House is fine, if you just want hotel rooms not a condo. The shore dive is pretty good, the gear lockers convenient and their dive boats are nice. The parking lot is terribly crowded depending on what time of day it is. On our last trip to Cayman about two weeks ago, we tried to shore dive there, but didn't since there wasn't a parking spot to be found on the lot. Nice place, but too crowded for me.

Cobalt Coast is nice, but they're kinda secluded up in West Bay.

Really depends what you are looking for and how much you want to pay.My opinions:

Sunset House. Too crowded.Dont care for the dive shop

Cobalt Coast. Great (quiet)location and dive op. Expensive but probably worth it.

Jeffs "resort". Basic but O.K.

Turtle Nest Inn. Very nice but not the best location for a diving vacation.Does have nice shallow snorkelling off the beach.Protected by the fringing reef so should be calm.

Compass Point (Ocean Frontiers) . Great Dive Op,Nice looking condos. Quiet location.

Look at Timeshare Users Group - Timeshare Owners Helping Each other, Unbiased Timeshare Information for All Owners, Buy Sell Rent Timeshare this is a site where timeshare owners rent out their units. Somebody has a 1 bedroom at Morritts on the East End they will rent for $600.That is a deal

If you like the idea of the East End (Quiet,GREAT diving) Morritts and Ocean Frontiers would be a good combination.

We stayed at Sunset House last summer. The dive ops, boats, and people were great. The bar is excellent. The only downside was that the room needed updating and the bathroom really needed updating.

I sure appreciate everyones great suggestions. I am still doing research. And always open for more information. Next question will be where to dive depending on where we stay. But thats another thread. Kathy

I echo Morritt's.

You can usually get a two bedroom, three full bath timeshare with a full kitchen for the week for quite a bit less than what a standard hotel room goes for. They are in the process of refurbishing the pool side units and most, if not all, should be done by June. The oceanfront units were all refurbished a couple of years back courtesy of Hurricane Ivan.

Here's a link to a forum with owners' posting of units for sale or rent. They don't allow posting of prices, but might be worth a look. Morritts Tortuga and Grand Resorts Forum :: View Forum - Rentals and Resales

The Reef resort next door is quite nice, but more expensive to rent.

The biggest down side (or up side depending on what you like) is that these resorts are isolated out on the East End. You would be hard pressed to find someplace that's a longer drive from George Town without getting you car quite wet in the process.

Since we "own" there (I guess that's by way of disclosure), we get a discount from Tortuga Divers, the on-resort dive op, and always use them for boat dives. They have always been very good to my wife, her kids and I and have never given us any reason to try anyone else. I have heard nothing but good things about Ocean Frontiers, the other East End dive op, both here on ScubaBoard and from people I've talked to in person.

I assume that you've been checking hotel prices, so you're over the initial sticker shock. Be aware that everything is more expensive in the Cayman Islands than in the U.S. and eating in for even one meal a day can add up in a hurry.

WE have checked into the time share. Some friends of our has a timeshare and were willing to give us one of their weeks. And there is nothing available. Most of them require a saturday check in and we will be there on a thursday and that is not negotiable because we are flying on air miles. I also emailed one of the owners at Morrits and unfortunately nothing available the week we get there. :( I am really looking at Turtle Nest Inn right now. We will have a car so location will not be a problem and we prefer the quieter area. Should be making a final decision the by end of the week.

If you dont mind doing a fair bit of driving then the Turtle Nest Inn would work out well. It is reasonably close to both Ocean Frontiers on the East End as well as Georgetown and the West End shore diving sites.

Just dont try and drive into Georgetown at 8.30 a.m.!!

We dont mind driving since we love being away from the town. I will just have to look for a dive op near the condo. We were there several years ago ( 10) and stayed in a remote area. I dont even remember the name of the little hotel we were at. But it was not a condo. Only had a bed and bathroom and we really wished that we had a kitchen. So that is my first priority is a nice place with a kitchen and air conditioning.

If you stay at the Turtle Nest Inn your nearest dive op will be Ocean Frontiers - a 20 minute drive to the East. Your closest good source for groceries would be the new mall in Savannah - about 10 minutes to the West.
