I am planning a last minute trip to Hawaii next week. I'll be spending the bulk of my time on Oahu visiting a friend, but I am planning a little excursion alone over to Kona for a few days (April 25th-28th ish) because I really want to do the Manta dive, and a few 2 tank am dives would be nice too.

Are there any affordable resorts/hotels that have an attached dive shop in Kona? Or offer shore diving? Or even an all inclusive with diving? I've been looking at the recommended dive shops on the board- Big Island Divers, Jacks Diving Locker, and Kona Diving Company, but I wasn't really planning to rent a car the whole time to go back and forth from my hotel to the shop. What is the best way to do a few days of diving alone in Kona on a budget?

Would I be better off in Maui for what I'm looking for?

Thanks for any advice!

Jackie

I dove with Jacks a year ago. They picked me up at my hotel on the way to the marina and droped me off.
If you stay in the Keauhou area you can just ride the trolley. It used to be free but, I think they charge a little now.

No
Or offer shore diving?
No - several of the big resorts have shore dives - even on-site operators but they're not affordable. The only shore dive you could easily do without a car is the Kailua/Kona pier downtown. There's a couple of older hotels nearby - the King Kamehemeha - it's a Courtyard by Marriott - or Kona Seaside - it's older about a block inland and probably 1/2 the price of the King K.

Jack's shop is about 2? blocks south of there - they also do an escorted shore dive at the pier - and will bring tanks - but their prices are the same as their boat dives 2/$125. The boat dive will be better. Almost all boat dive operators leave from Honokahau harbor north of town so call around and see if someone will pick you up. Or you could take the trolley to their shop/office as an option. Besides Jack's, some of the others are in an industrial park slightly NE of downtown.

The only other shore dive possibilities might be if you could find a cab that would allow you to bring tanks. The three that are possible south of Kona are Pahoehoe Beach Park, Mile Marker #4 or Kahuluu Beach Park. IDK Pahoehoe at all, MM4 is just south of Magic Sands Beach - there are lifeguards there - didn't look like too bad of an entry. Kahuluu Beach is more for snorkelers. It's less than 7' deep for a long way out. Lot's of turtles there - in the water and sunning on the rocks. I assume MM4 means it's 4 miles from Kona. One thing you might do is call KDC. My buddy dove with them about a year ago. The owner's husband commutes for long intervals (lives near me in AZ) so he's often looking for mid-week dive buddies. They did one site south of Kona with a bunch of spinner dolphins - IDK who drove.
Or even an all inclusive with diving?
None of those either - on either island. Very few resorts even have both an onsite operator and dive. The only I can think of on Maui are the Sheraton Black Rock, the Grand Wailea or the Ritz in Kapalua. None fit my idea of "budget".

No shops are even particularly close to dive sites since all are public beaches - often a short drive in off the main road with limited parking. Most of the dive operators are primarily boat-based as well - esp. in the Kihei area.

IDK either. Everybody charges around $120-140 for 2 boat dives. It's that way on Maui also. I think expenses (and gas) are higher so that gets passed on.

Would I be better off in Maui for what I'm looking for?
Not to night dive with the Manta's. The only Manta's typically seen off Maui are at one site where there's a cleaning station. But it's not the same as the Kona Dive, the attraction there (for the Mantas) is feeding in all the lights.

Maui might be a little more solo/shore accessible. Shaka Divers runs a dive bus in the Kihei area. IDK if/where he picks up. If you could find reasonable accommodations - that would be the place. Shaka Doug even has a condo - couple? he's renting now - maybe if they're not full he'd let you have it for a couple days. Ed Robinson's does something similar also.

Maui Dreams Dive Co. also does escorted shore dives - and tank rentals. Most of the other operators in that area are in Kihei somewhere - their boats leave from the Kihei boat ramp daily for Molokini. I don't actually know if there's any affordable hotels there - we stay in condos.

One more reasonable option might be to stay/dive in Lahaina. Extended Horizons is there - they do both boat/shore diving. Lahaina Divers is downtown also. Mala Pier is one of the best shore dives on Maui - you'd walk in just down the street from LD. Tiny Bubbles Scuba also shore dives - their shop is just north of there - so maybe they could work something out also.

There's a couple of older, smaller hotels in Lahaina - one is Lahaina Inn. The other is the Best Western Pioneer Inn. It's a really old building waterfront but is pretty reasonable (for Maui) IIRC. Fly into the West Maui airport from Honolulu - GO, Mokulele or Pacific Air - and a cab ride won't be horribly expensive to that area. There might even be a bus - IDK.

Boat dives from either area run 2/$100-120 From Lahaina you'd likely dive the Cathedrals at Lanai - from Kihei it's Molokini. Although Lahaina Divers also dives Molokini - they've got the big boat for the return crossing - it gets rough when the tradewinds pick up late morning.

For boat dives in Kihei I usually recommend B&B Scuba, Mike Severns or Ed Robinsons. Probably the only one I'm less thrilled about is Maui Dive Shop - they have/had a Kihei boat but their other boat - based in Ma'alea Harbor is fed by all their shops so can be crowded. Sometimes Lahaina Divers can be also - once it was two of us, 4 asian ladies and another couple. The DM took them on an escorted dive leaving us free to do our own the opposite (deeper) way. Probably a bad idea in retrospect, the current was ripping.

hth, Hawaii and affordable aren't often seen in the same sentence. :D

Hi Jackie - maybe you could save money - enough to rent a small car - if you go to HomeAway Vacation Rentals: Beach Houses, Condos, Cabins, Villas & Vacation Rental Homes. Get a place with a small kitchen - buy a loaf of bread, dozen eggs, fruit, cereal, milk and save a ton of money eating out.

I'm not going until May but I found a beautiful oceanfront 1BR condo about a mile south of Kona. Rent was only $125 per night - add that to a rental car and you can be 3 nights with a rental car for about $500 - 3 dives with Big island Divers at $119.95 per dive at their multiples discount - $360 more. Add your meals and extras to that - if your lucky 3 days/nights of diving for $1,000 including food and travel.

As I've read a lot - you won't enjoy the Kona area too much unless you have a car.

Diversteve- wow, thanks so much for all the great info, I have so much more to go on and research further now. I almost want to do Maui too now! I'm used to the "backpacker" style dive shops/resorts you can find in the Caribbean, like in Roatan, and the dirt cheap all-inclusives of Mexico. Hawaii is a different beast! Which is fine, I just don't want to spend more than I have to at this point (recently out of school). Just checked Kona Seaside, it's about $110 a night after taxes this time of year, and walking distance from Jacks shop (website says they meet there for morning dives)- that is a very good possibility! I am also finding nice condos on VRBO.com that come in around that price too, some even a little less.

Barrod- That link has good condos, some of them I also saw on vrbo, and some are even walking distance to dive shops. I probably will want to do a car one day to see sites around the island? 1k was exactly my budget for 3 days, it's gonna be tight, it'll come down to what I eat.

I wouldn't want to go shore diving alone, I'm not solo cert, and new to the island, I was just thinking maybe there were dive resorts, like in Bonaire, where people are constantly going in and out of the water. I was wrong. Good to know. I just love those shore dive resorts you can get 4-5 dives a day in.

Kahuluu Beach snorkeling with turtles sounds fun too.

I called Jacks and they are centrally located and were really flexible with my last minute planning. A few days of diving with Jacks, and a manta dive, and the lowest price hotel/condo I can find in walking distance to Jacks seems to be the way to go on Kona.

Any other *must do* things on Kona?

Thanks for everyone's help! Researching a new place can be overwhelming.

Black Water Night Dive see pelagic fish off Kona Hawaii's magic coast line Scuba Hawaii

Blackwater Disco Diving/Dancing with Pelagics - YouTube

This is the coolest video in the world - you gotta watch till the end to see what comes to visit!

I chose Big Island Divers. Whoever you decide to dive with seems like are on very similar levels of great service. I am going to do the night dive in 7,000' of water sounds like fun. The website I linked has a good explanation of the tether system they use etc. etc.

OMG why did you have to post that, it looks awesome and now I want to spend more money! When you go, you gotta do it right I suppose! That is something I seriously might want to try. I <3 Jellies too.

This is literally 50 yds. or less from Jacks Diving Locker - Kona Islander Inn Vacation Rental - VRBO 37620 - Kailua-Kona Condo in HI, Delightful! in the Heart of Kona But Quiet $68/nt. + add 13.4% Hawaii lodging tax - they all have to.

Click on their map - zoom in about 4-5 times - Jack's is marked - it's a square white roof just to the SE. Scroll up slightly - follow Alii Drive - the street in front of the condo around the bay to where it turns north - the pier just south there is Kailua/Kona Pier - the dive site.

Coconut Grove Marketplace - where Jack's is located - also has an Outback, a coffee shop, sports bar and about 3-4 other restaurants etc.

Or if you book 3 days of 2 tank AM diving with Kona Diving Co. - it's $330. 3 Day Dive Package

I see it, that condo is a great deal ($282 for 3 days) and super close to Jacks, I won't know my exact days in Kona till I get to Oahu, but I definitely think I'll be going the condo route!

Kona Diving is also a great deal, $330 for a 3 day dive package, and only an extra $10 to do the manta dive making it $340. Jacks doesn't have a package online, but I called and they give $10 off your second day of diving, and $15 off each additional day, making their price only $10 or $20 above Kona. I'll just go to which ever shop is closest to the condo I end up in.

Thanks everyone! I am so excited to dive the big island, my last dives off Honolulu were a little dissapointing. Can't wait to see those mantas!

Unless prices have gone up the last couple years, you should be able to get a hotel room, or even condo, for $90/nt or so, all in, at the bottom of the market range. There's lots of inventory in Kona. I find VRBO hard to navigate, but you can also google for kona condo rentals or try one of the agencies like SunQuest (they've been sending me sale notices), ATR, Prince, Knutsen - there are quite a few.

If you want to walk to the dive shop, Jack's is a good option. Staying cheaply downtown, walking to diving, and renting at Jack's (there's also at least one other, smaller shop downtown), could work, but your choice of sites would be pretty limited. You'd also miss the chance to see some beautiful parts of the island, esp right south of Kailua-Kona. If there's a bus that runs down Alii Dr., in theory you could have your choice of dozens of nice sites, w/o renting a car. Nearly every Shoreline Access sign leads to nice diving along Alii. The sites there would be among the least remote, and safest, of Kona shore diving. Most shore entries are going to be off lava, which actually works to your advantage because your can find spots with enough depth right at shore to avoid a lot of water movement. However, you have to be conservative and prudent, because if there is groundswell, it can get ugly.

If you rent a car, even if you do mostly boat diving, take two tanks and head 20 miles south to Honaunau/Two-Step - a protected cove with great coral and sea life, always lots of snorkelers and divers, often dolphins, and about the tamest shore dive around.

I'm arriving the 28th with one other semi-dive buddy, if you're still there and want to try a shore dive, give me a holler.

Oh yeah, the night Manta dive is absolutely a must!!

Mike
