After reading a number of threads on this board in regards to dive ops in the Riviera Maya area, I am in touch with Alvaro from AlwaysDiving. My husband and I are sneaking away for a quick 9 nights at the end of Aug and have already booked the first 5 nights at a luxury Playa resort. I originally planned on diving as soon as we arrived but since we're paying a pretty penny @ the Paradisus La Perla, I thought it best that we relax, eat, and drink as much as possible while there. We would probably do at least one day of local diving there, as I think there are cenotes?
I'm trying to decide where to go/stay for the remaining 4 nights. We are flying in and out of Cancun International and since Alvaro's dive op is in the Cancun area, north of Playa, I was thinking that the diving might be better (aka more time efficient for us in terms of getting to and from dive sites) if we aim to stay in either Cozumel or somewhere north of Playa. Many blogs and threads say that Cozumel is dirty and overrun with tourists and the beaches aren't as nice as Playa. Others rave about it. My husband doesn't drink and we are a bit past the clubbing age so we don't want to land in the Cancun hotel zone either. We love a nice beach and would prefer nothing below 4-star (celebrating our anniversary) hotels. We are also both gluten free so good food is a huge bonus, whether it be local or at a resort. We like to wander in our free time so the hotel doesn't have to be AI but I haven't found many non-AI hotels that are any cheaper.
I am overwhelmed with the sheer number of options and figured it best to get the intel from the more experienced Riviera Maya travelers and divers. Any help, advice or guidance would be GREATLY appreciated. Thank you
