Hi everyone - I have negotiated a deal with my employer to go somewhere for two weeks as an "experiment" in either September or October. I am a an accountant but it is for a construction company so very hands on. I will need reliable WiFi for Skype, etc. and probably +- 4 hours from PST (I live in Seattle). I will be "working" for a good portion of the time but want to mix in some fun (diving) and night life. The diving doesn't have to be "epic". I will be bringing my wife who dives but will not be working.

Any thoughts on a good location to visit for two weeks for a reasonable cost, not wasting too much time travelling (one day each way max) and that would cater to my needs to work part of the day and play at night going from Seattle? We just went to Costa Rica and loved it and that's about the speed we are looking for. Diving was so-so but everything else was great.

As this is an experiment, I don't want to screw this up. :-)

Cayman, USVI, Jamaica, Grand Bahama, Nassau.

I thought of Cozumel but then also thought of the last time we were there in October and got massive rains. Probably just bad luck but it is the Caribbean in the fall. Cozumel is intriguing though as the three hour time difference could actually play in my favor, dive in the morning, work, have fun out at night, repeat as needed.

Florida Keys...Key Largo would be my choice.

How about Hawaii? It's not cheap but you can shop around for options that will fit your budget. It isn't too far from Seattle and I think that the time difference is only 2 hours. Plus there are plenty of topside and nightlife activities to enjoy and excellent diving - different from the Caribbean but very good.

But if you want to travel in the Caribbean in the fall and you want good wifi, good diving, good weather, and a variety of topside activities, you might consider Curacao - I think that the time difference is 4 hours.

Other options include St. Croix and Grand Cayman - but the weather will be a gamble - that is true across much of the Caribbean, Mexico, and Central America.

I love Hawaii but, man, two weeks in Hawaii with diving, accommodations, and food is really expensive and even more so when compared to the Caribbean like Cozumel. OP could do an all inclusive or lodging plus food separately. All that plus diving will be less than a decent night’s hotel stay in Hawaii. When I was at Occidental in cozumel it was $104 per night out the door for their boutique section of the resort which had free WiFi, all-inclusive with minibar in room and room service 24 hours a day, plus 1 tank of diving a day. Options for a la carte dining included. Extra dives at $27 or $37 each. I can’t remember exactly. Flight costs are about the same though both dip to about half price depending on the market. But landing costs and on the ground costs are definitely lower in Coz.

I know, I have been to Hawaii twice and I loved it but it is expensive. But for me the flights are some of the biggest costs and since the OP is starting in Seattle I thought that he might be able to find cheaper airfare (but you are from SF so you would know if that's an option?) My idea was that if the OP could rent a condo, cook some meals, and arrange a dive package that included some shore diving, then the price might be do-able? The water will be warm in Hawaii in the fall, and it is the off-season so it might be a little cheaper.

Some of the other locations that have been suggested are also pricey and since he wants to travel in September/October but avoid the risk of rainy, stormy weather then his Caribbean choices are limited pretty much to the ABC islands - and it may still be rainy there just not as likely to get hit by a hurricane. He also wants same day travel and staying within 4 hours of the Pacific Time Zone, good WiFi, and topside entertainments so that further limits the options. He may have to compromise on something - maybe budget!
