Welcome to the Board Mantee - when you have your dates of travel drop me a PM and we'll see about doing a shore dive together while you're here. If you'll be around here on May 6 please plan on joining us for our Maui Monthly BBQ -

Aloha, Tim

Don't underestimate the shore diving! There is easy access to a number of shore dives in the Kihei area, and if you are willing to drive to Lahaina, some wonderful ones up there. We did Ulua beach as day and night dives, White Rock, and Ahihi beach in the Kihei area. They were all good dives. The day we spent with kidspot, we did the Mala Boat Ramp (one of the best dives of the trip for me), Old Airport, and Honolua Bay.

The shore dives are wonderful because they stay pretty shallow (for us, usually in the 35 foot range) so a tank lasts forever and NDLs are almost irrelevant. There is a ton of sea life to admire, and a dive costs $10 (even less for us, because Peter's folks live there so we got the local resident discount rate).

Comparing the shore diving to the charter diving, I decided that, although we will go out on boats again, I will tilt the balance toward a LOT more shore diving for future trips.

If you are interested in good information on shore diving, www.shorediving.com has good descriptions of dive sites, including photographs of the entries and parking.

kidspot:
That if he ever develops an allergy to mango he is going to be very sick ...
I've been very sick because of Mangos too. If you eat more than 3 of them in a day, they have a way of blowing through your system like a Tusami on crack.

Has anyone ever overdosed on Mangos?..........Maybe they should put a warning label on them?

Great info on shore diving TSandM. Checked out shorediving.com. I LIKE IT. Will definately also check out some of the shore dives. I think we need more days in Maui (or should I say in the water around Maui?).

Man cannot live by Mangos alone.

They are the largest shop other than Maui Dive Shop - They run the largest dive boat on the island, while some call them a cattle boat (I have not dove with them yet) it seems they are on the "Good cattle boat" list if anything. They do tend to have smaller tanks (72's) and a little shorter dives, but they get good reviews for having friendly, helpful crew, especially good with new divers. Most say their boat is not crowded, probably because even though they take more divers out than anyone else at a time, they don't fill the boat to capacity either. Some good people working in their shop - one of the better gear techs on the island works for them too.

All in all you'll find Lahaina divers to be a nice shop. Though it depends on the employee you get (I've had guys spend large amounts of time, who are very friendly and helpful and others who are just trying to push a sale on you) But once you've found a good employee, ask for them by name and you're all set...

Aloha, Tim
