Strap it to your leg.
I can see it now.. knife strapped to one leg calf, snorkel strapped to the other.. and a Spare Air strapped to each thigh :eyebrow:

I carry an Oceanic Pocket Snorkel which is actually usable as a snorkel if needed. I once tried to use one of the aqualung fold up snorkels and it was clearly designed just to satisfy someone's requirement to carry a snorkel. The Oceanic one works fine if needed, has good attatchment system and fits nicely in a pocket.

Why carry a snorkel? If conditions are that bad, you should still have a few hundred psi left in your tank. That should last enough time to get you back to the boat or to shore on the surface. So just breathe off your reg. Snorkels are for training :D (meaning they're required by some of the cert agencies)

There are a number of reasons, including long surface swims back to the boat in choppy water and long surface "waits" in bad conditions wondering where the boat is, and *REALLY* long swims back to shore if the boat doesn't come back. So far I've had the first two and hope to never have the third.

I like the idea of havng a snorkel and have actually used it a few times, I just don't like having the thing hang off my mask and flop around.

I just picked up an Oceanic pocket snorkel as Hoyden mentioned, and it looks like it will be just right. It fits into the formerly unusable corner of one of my pockets, and actually seems like it would be a reasonable snorkel, if needed.

Thanks to everybody for their suggestions.

Long swims are easier for me on my back, not with my face in the water. And the same for waiting for a boat. Why would you want to be looking down when the boat is up on the surface?
Snorkels are good for snorkeling. When you don't have scuba.

Well, since I screwed up and posted this twice....And ANOTHER bad thing about snorkels when diving....I'll think of it...

Snorkels have turned out to pretty contentious. There are three different threads on the subject right now.

Lots of arguments have been brought forward for and against carrying your snorkel on an actual dive. All very well, but when a whale shark, dolphin pod or manta decides to visit during your surface interval, you'll be sorry if you left your snorkel at home. So just pack it.

If I had to carry one, I would probably bungie it to my tank as well. I've been out in as much as twelve foot "chop" and haven't required one. I just swim on my back. If your still having problems, put a little more air in your bc. If that doesent work, your probably overweighted. Hey Pug, great idea about the tank boots for hangers. Thanks, I may do that myself.

It's usually thrown somewhere in the gear bag for reasons like that. I think the question here was where do you keep it while diving...and most keep it...in the gear bag. :D

And those who think it may have its uses...keep it in a pocket! :eyebrow:

Three on-going threads on the same subject...far out!! :11:
