Web Monkey:
I like having a snorkel with me, but I don't like it hanging off my mask, since I only rarely actually need it.

It's rigid, so it doesn't fit in a BC pocket, and I can't seem to find a good place (or method) of attaching it on the outside so that it's not in the way.

Anybody have any ideas?

Terry

Why take something you rarely use? Especially since it gets in the way, and at least here in California, gets entangled in kelp. In short snorkels are worse than useless underwater. And on the surface that big tank of compressed gas on your back is still useable.

Leave the snorkel at home unless you plan to snorkel.

Just kidding! I don't have a snorkel nail to the wall in the garage. I use drywall screws to hold them there. :D

Actually, I have tank boots screwed to the wall to hang hoses and reg sets over... I keep the snorkels on the floor in the corner and one on each boat.

Why carry a snorkel? If conditions are that bad, you should still have a few hundred psi left in your tank. That should last enough time to get you back to the boat or to shore on the surface. So just breathe off your reg. Snorkels are for training :D (meaning they're required by some of the cert agencies)

I've got mine on my wall of scuba diving relics along with Carl Brashear's diving helmet :D

I own the Scubapro mentioned above. I find it stowes away easily in my BCD pocket and have had good use of it on occasion, though the remarks about using the reg seem equally sensible. You might also choose swim om your back.
However, I also consider the doom scenario of an out-of-air situation combined with having to get back to boat or shore in choppy conditions, and wil continue to carry the snorkel for that reason, if not just because my agency rules require it.

PS Looking back, I realise that the kind of dives I've been doing (2 shore dives on one tank) also discouraged me from using my tank air at the surface. Come to think of it, breathing from a reg in cold weather may cause the first stage to freeze and I've seen this happen to a buddy several times. Another reason to stick to the snorkel.

I usually just bungie it to the tank. That makes the padi DM's down in the keys are happy.

I carry a snorkel attached to my BP between the plate & the wing. When you are 100 miles from shore & the only boat around, it could end up as a survival aid. But I sure hope not.

Mine is stored in a box in the closet with the kids snorkeling gear. It comes out only when I go snorkeling with them.
