First dive ever. Resort course in Grand Cayman with Don Foster, the "cattle boat" operation (not the over-rated "original" Don Foster). Circa 1987. On the Oro Verde, maybe 55-60' deep. The DM briefed me there might be a 600# jewfish in the area. Visibility seemed forever (for a newby). Water was gin clear. (Personal preference as opposed to vodka or Evian) 150'. Maybe more. Or less. And yes, the jewfish made an appearance. I first caught him out of the corner of my mask. Looked like a dirigible. Since then I've has its equal but never surpassed it.
