Earlier this year I signed up a contract to write a script for a film. It has been over four months and I have not even started. Life always gets in the way and days turn into weeks and weeks turn into months. The deadline will soon be approaching like a freight train on a collision course. I was thinking of going somewhere for three weeks with my laptop and finish most of this while I am away.

I was looking at remote dive destinations that are isolated and quiet. In a nutshell the ideal destination would be as follows:

1. Some place where I could do only 2 tank boat dives in the morning just to clear my head and spend the rest of the day doing what I am supposed to. Write!

2. Some place where there will be good internet connectivity.

3. I would like to be away from crowds and party scene. No topside activities to distract me. No socializing. Just pure meditative isolation.

4. Most of my time will be spent on the lap-top mostly inside the hotel room sometimes in the lobby and occasionally outside if the place allows some sitting area etc.

From your past experiences, if a place pops to mind then please let me know. I was thinking Saba because it is not over-crowded and gives two tank dives plus a whole day of nothingness.

Cozumel?

Bonaire........great dives, mostly shore so you have full control of your day.....no party place.....good internet.....quite, serene and good diving.

Dominica. Away from the dive dedicated tourist hotels/inns in the Roseau Area. Rent your own little villa and car, or stay in a non- dive dedicated nature focused operation that supplies private cottages.

I once had two weeks to complete a section of a book that I was supposed to be writing over the previous few months. All I had were some random notes and a vague outline. I finished with enough time to get in a few dives and explore the rainforest every morning. Some of my best lines and concepts came to me as I toyed with language and ideas in the back of my mind while doing other things. I'd drive back to my cottage and start typing on my Olivetti portable (this was a long time ago). Now they have excellent internet connections.

The place is wonderfully quiet. Distractions are easy to avoid.

Saba is actually a good choice. Two tank dives in the AM, an afternoon of writing and possibly a hike somewhere, evenings at a good restaurant and then more writing. Not much else to do. Internet may be an issue, as I recall it was available, but slow and not cheap. My partner spend most of the time we were there working on a book while I went diving. The diving is right there so no long boat rides to "waste" time and for the Caribbean the diving is pretty good. The only downside is that the entire island is not a budget destination.

The thought of lugging gear around the island in a pick-up truck sounds a bit too much work right before coming back to the room to write. I am headed there next month so it might change my mind.

It is, IMO........I'd do @ least 75% boat dives(like we did..:))

Go to Brac. Shore dive by yourself, all day everyday , no truck required. Good internet, safe food and from now until Christmas you will be the only diver. According to my friends, it is the most boring place on earth. BTW, they are no longer friends. Cheers
