Thanks to all who replied. I guess the motto is just keep hunting! I won't be able to get out this weekend. But next weekend we're going out with Cape Ann Divers on a boat dive for lobstering. I know...cheaper to buy'em at the store. But it isn't nearly as fun! :D

The large lobster at Cat Rocks actually seemed to come out after us. No hiding there.

DO you mean "too large to take"? Oversize lobsters seem to know they have nothing to fear from divers.

The biggest one I've ever caught (and released) came right at me like he was going to eat me. Not much of a contest catching him.

Well, it's official. I have officially bagged my first keeper. Unfortunately, it's my only keeper. But it was tastey none the less.

Did a two tank boat dive with Cape Ann Charters Sunday afternoon. Surprisingly the weather cooperated even though a front was supposed to be moving through.

We first dove at Lane's Cove. Couldn't extracate any keepers. The claws I saw in the holes looked way too big for me to stick my mitts in there (yup, chicken). Lots of lobsters that were just under size.

Second dive was Folly Point (cool topography). There were a few big ones I couldn't get out of their holes. But did manage my first keeper. Used my tickle stick - got it in the hole at an angle behind him, then poked him in the tail. He shot out and I grabbed him.

It was my first time with a tickle stick (home made) and using a light. The light was a huge asset. The one keeper I did catch needed the tickle stick. One lobster was backing in to his hole as my buddy was trying to grab him. I stuck my tickle stick in the back of the crevace it was in, and he shot out. Pretty cool. But just too small.

Would love to get out to Folly Point again.

Nice job! It's addicting, isn't it? I sometimes think I have more fun lobstering in freezing water with crap vis than I do in the islands...

could somebody give me some hints in how to catch lobsters, they seem hard to grab, what is the the right way to aproach and grab them?

When I first started taking MSilvia lobster diving; it started a joke. "If you want to grab it, it's not legal. If you rear back in fear; it's worthwhile. Matt would beacon me over and tell me to watch him as he went for a lobster, which, of course, would be too small. When he beaconed me over, started going towards it, then backed off... I handed him the flag and nabbed the keeper he was scared of :)

I tend to get up above and behind, and try to swish water in from any potential holes in the back of their lair [or tap 'em with a tickle stick from there]. That tends to get them to come out a little; then you just gotta be fast and have some balls. More experience brought more bolder moves. I knew one guy that would pull his fingers out of his gloves, stick his hand in and have it latch onto the glove fingers and pull him out still latched on :) There's also other tricks that are morally and legally questionable... like using a mirror to take advantage of their territorial nature :)
