It's a really good question, which all of us who live away from cave country have to face. I try to make two trips a year to cave dive, which means the first dive of each trip is being done after six months or more of pure recreational diving. We always plan a simple shakedown dive in a place we know very well, on backgas (no stages, no deco) to get back in the swing of things.

But my recreational diving is done using the same gear and the same procedures, and I practice some of the same skills, although I don't dive doubles much at home.

I have no problem doing a "light" technical dive (I.e. a dive where we stay in recreational depths and overstay our limits, planning a little O2 deco at 20 feet) even if I haven't done it in quite a while.
