You forgot the option of 'when they are due'.

I get service and VIP done when they fall due. In most cases, this does not coincide with start or end of season. But then, up here in Ontario, some of us don't recognise dive seasons, the water just gets crustier in the Winter!

I try to get the cylinders annually from the purchase date. Regultaors pretty much the same for those still eligible for free parts. For regs that are no longer eligible for free parts they get service when needed, typically every two years.

What's a "dive season" ... :D

Since I fill and VIP my own cylinders, I VIP them when I notice they're due (or overdue) ... ;)

I'll sometimes check them before heading off on a trip, just to make sure there won't be any issues with fills when I'm not doing it myself.

My oldest cylinders will be coming due for their first hydro later this year ...

I am considering buying tanks this week from Gypsy Divers in Raleigh. Will I need to have a VIP done on these new tanks or is that part of buying new tanks.

dive season would be ( for me anyways ) my last dive before it gets to cold. I don't have a dry suit and water here get down in the upper 40s. I not down with freezing LOL!! so october to april would be my off season. I was just wondering not for the regs so much , but for my tank. I cracked the valve on it and noticed a funny smell. I know the air in it is old. is that fine ( as long as I get a new fill )or should I have it checked out.

You should be able to store air in your cylinders for more than a few months without worrying about it. If your air smells funny, my recommendation would be take the cylinder in somewhere where they can drain and inspect it. Chances are you got a bad air fill at some point in the past and have contaminants inside the cylinder that aren't going to come out by simply replacing the air that's currently in the cylinder. You may need to have the cylinder cleaned (a Simple Green solution, thorough rinse, and drying usually suffices).

Definitely get it checked out ...
