I have a Sherwood Avid BC and love it but I have noticed in all the recomendations and raves on the subject of jacket stile BCs, The Avid or Sherwood is barely(if ever) mentioned. Not that my preference will change but I was wondering if there is a reason other people seem to not like the Avid or Sherwood.

It's the same reason they dislike Genesis.....their products are just s good if not better then most recommended by the 'gurus' but it seems that it is not known. The only negative feedback is from people that never saw them or dove with them.

i love my avid BCD too. davyjones, i agree with you that they're not well-represented by the media, however divers know that they're great.

i dove an avid when i got my open water a while back. i thought it performed well, but i feel the weight system is terrible. i had so much trouble ditching the weights because the buckles are so far back, terrible weight design if you ask me. now i use zeagle and ditching is a breeze.

The members of this and other boards, love their back plates and wings, and give little thought to anything else.

I started wearing the Sherwood Avid fairly recently. The weights pull out easily for me, yet they don't feel like they could fall out unintentionally as they did on my old BC. I also like the folding snorkel pouch. If you wear a jacket/vest BC, I think the Sherwood Avid is a great choice.

The Avid is a great BC and with a street price of $400 it is hard to beat on price. Sherwood is just not as big as Scubapro or Aqualung. When my best friend was looking to buy his gear I steered him toward an Avid.

I think that some of us are getting a bad rap here. I do dive with a backplate and wings, I also dive with a zeagle. When my son was certified and eventually wanted his own BC, I didn't make him get a BP/W setup. We tried a bunch of different BCs and he decided that he liked the Sherwood, so that is what he got. I prefer a BP/W setup but thats the type of diving I like to do.
Most people recomend what they use, more experienced people tend to give more and (hopefully) better advice and it seems (from my experience) that frequent divers usually move from jacket BCs to back inflation and many move to BP/W setups. That doesn't mean that there are no experienced divers in jacket BCs and it definately doesn't mean that a diver in a BP/Ws is a good diver.
While there are no doubt many rabid BP/W fans here (often DIR) most people don't care what type of BC you use. If you ask for opinions, that's what you get. We all know what opinions are like....

Everybody should dive the gear that they are comfortable in and that fits their type of diving, provided of course, that it is safe.

TT ;)

How often do you have to ditch your weights? If that's a real problem, maybe you should retake your OW class ;)

I dive the Sherwood Freedom , They just came out with a NEW BCD called the Toruga ,I think is really cool. I also have seen the NEW Avid for '05 and they did a great job on it with a weight system thats easy to install and remove
