I just came back from doing a dive in Key West and the Viz was horrible. The dive outfit took us to Dry Rock reef and said that they are experiencing an Algae Bloom and Viz was around 20-30 feet. Was the guy "BS"ing us or does this happen often.

Thanks

The viz gets better when the current is running. Key West is NOT the best diving in the Keys. To much run off and the reefs are pretty bad when compared to Looe, Sombereo or Molassas reefs.

If there is an algae bloom it because of the pollution dumped into the waters.

I have been diving there once when the viz was 40-50 feet. That was 6 years ago.

ok I'm confused... Dry Rocks is in Key Largo; it's the site of the "Christ of the Abyss" statute. Are you sure about which key you were in? maybe there is a dry rocks in Key Weird...I mean, West. Billb is right about Key Weird...(I did it again), West not being the best in the Keys, but there has been a large amount of red algae buildup, which has taken its toll on vis. During this season the vis in the keys (not Key We....st) is above 50'.

I think every area has a "Dry Rocks" reef. Even the Conch Divers' website recognizes those names. I've dived the Western Dry Rocks before down there, but that was in '01.

My favorite instance of the "dry rocks" name is at Largo, where you have North Dry Rocks and North North Dry Rocks (a.k.a. "The Statue") I guess that's why God made GPS...
