I'm a Fish!
Rumor has it that as they continue to expand their campsites, Pearl Lake will no longer be a scuba mecca for many of us Midwesterners. Any truth to this?

Honestly, the gossip I hear says it will be all camping and "fishing" in another 2-3 years. Anyone know the story?

I haven't heard that. I find it hard to believe that fishing would be an option as I've not seen a plethora of fish in that place, and it's not that big. You could fish it out in a few weeks.
It would be a shame because shops would have to find another pond for training.

Thats why I put "fishing" in parenthesis.

But if you've been out there this year, you know they extended the camping area, and even have campsites next to the water. I heard they will continue to put campsites around the entire lake over the next couple of years.

That is gossip and not from any credible source. That is why I am curious.

I can only add to the rumor. The amount of divers using Pearl has decreased dramatically since I started diving there in 1988. Where thos campsites are used to be loaded with carloads of divers. these days on a good day I think there might be 200 divers there. Back in the late 80' there was at times probably 2-3 times as many. As far doing away with diving, that's hard to say. They need to address some diver's needs instead of all the camping. The porta potties are garbage. They need a few more objects to dive in out deeper from the training platforms. The training platforms aren't really very good platforms as they are leaned up against the bottom contour underneath. This isn't much better than having students on the bottom. Everything still gets stirred up just the same. They wouldn't need to invest much money in making a great place. In my opinion it is better than haigh as everybody is spread out a little more.

If the weather cooperates this weekend, I am supposed to be up at Pearl. I'll flat out ask the guy in the shop.

I think the above rumor is based on the rumor that I heard.

Apparently the owners of Pearl Lake also own another quarry which is just up the road. That quarry will be mined out in the next 5 years, so there plans to convert that quarry into a diving site with better facilities. Mind you... this is only a rumor..

If that's the case, then I guess it would make sense that they would close diving @ Pearl.

It would be REALLY nice to be able to populate one of these underwater amusement parks prior to the flooding.... make some more neat oddities in the nether reagions...

It was too early in the morning (like 9:00 AM), and I forgot to ask. :)

One thing I noticed was that there were several nice new diving area signs and brand new fences at the diving area. It didn't look to me like they are phasing out diving, but I could be wrong. They were also building what looked like nice rental trailers with good size decks adjacent to the sub/Thora Ann shore just across the road.
