I'm going to say that Unforgiven is the best modern Western. It has alot of stars in it (Eastwood, Hackman, Freeman, Harris, etc), has a very dark and gritty feel to it, and is very entertaining.

Open Range is good too, but not quite as entertaining.

Open Range was...ok...not bad but certainly not one of Costner's better movies.

Another western that had Costner in it, that I enjoyed more, was Silverado, more so than Dances With Wolves.

Silverado, Tombstone and The Long Riders are my three favorites.

Unforgiven
Eastwood,

"or I'll come back and kill every one of you sons a b*#*#*." That was classic. I'll watch the whole movie just to see that again.

The all time BEST is Lonesome Dove!

I gotta go with The Unforgiven. It was a great movie on so many levels. The acting was superb. Eastwood did a great job in showing how the west really was and not glamorizing it. The haunting soundtrack. I could go on but I'll just end it here.

I vote for Tombstone, but anything with Sam Eliot, Robert Duval or Tom Sellick are pretty good.
