Anybody know anything on how to read side scan sonar, why the discrepancy of black through the sonar images. of the Portland??? As for the debate, I'd say the u-853, and the blackpoint, granted they're off RI, but charters from Ma run there. Talk about history, the last uboat sunk in WW II, and the ship the uboat sunk (blackpoint) comeon, you can't beat history like that.

Side scan has a blind spot directly below it. They are basically a little torpedo that is towed through the water that sends out sonar. For whatever reason, there is a blind spot directly below it.

The other black you may be seeing is sonar shadow. That works just like light shadows...if the side-scan is slightly to one side, a shadow will appear.

In other words, you can use the shadows to get a sense of the elevation of objects and structures that cause them. On some images (not of the Portland), a long thin shadow might indicate an intact mast, for example.

Me either, but with a famous wreck like that lying at a depth where it's deep even for experienced tech divers, I think it's got a lot of potential to become the new Doria if it's ever opened up.

It would be such a great experience to be the first to see a wreck.....

i know the first ... wow that would be something ...
its like the feeling you get after the first snow and you are the first person to make tracks.. it feels cool :octopus:

yedah yeah i know im a loser .. but i think stuff like that is cool :)

I'm telling you guys....it's all about the Field & Sea......
Ahh... yes. The good 'ol Field & Sea. Wonderful wreck. A little tight to get down to the good parts though!

For a wreck which is at Open Water depth, yet is still recognizable as a boat, as opposed to a pile of random junk, you may try Chelsea. Sixty feet to the bottom.

In any case, I recommend you do several shore dives before you dive off a boat - for wrecks or anything else.

Spectre, is that you in the picture?

perfect, man. pure perfection. mind those fish on the wreck. they've taken out more than one good diver.

Dr. Evil: "I want frickin' sharks with laser beams on the Field & Sea."

No. 2: "We couldn't get sharks, Dr. Evil. They're now on the endangered species list. But we did get Brook Trout."

Dr. Evil: "Are they ill-tempered?"

No. 2: "Absolutely."
