This is PRECISELY the type of stuff you should report. If it's merely a difference of opinion that's one thing. We really don't need people calling other people names JUST BECAUSE they don't agree with them. Heck, I don't mind taking them on, and it DOES piss them off. So sad, too bad. I've had one poster suggest that I don't play fair because I expose the fallacy of this type of mindset. Too funny.

Let's keep ScubaBoard open for ALL to post in.

The key word in my post, which I italicized, was suggest. Perhaps I should have said imply. They don't call people names, usually, they just make sure with smug self assurance that you hear that all mainstream values in scuba are wrong. The agency with which you are trained is incompetent. Your instructor was incompetent, as are they all. (And if you are an instructor, the implication is....) Has anyone ever heard a post that says a certain agency's name means "Put Another Dollar In"? Wow! What an original and clever comment! Never heard that before.

If you have ever read Animal Farm, you know that no one can have a meaningful discussion there because every time someone says something intelligent, the sheep start bleating a meaningless slogan which drowns out all attempts at useful discourse.

It isn't the individual post--it's the constant bleating that wears you down. As someone we all know says in his signature, no single drop thinks it's responsible for the flood.

I wrote something like this earlier in my initial post in this thread, and a very level-headed SB member adivsed me, wisely, to give up trying to post on these issues. I was told to ignore these rants and let them go. That is good for one's sanity, but when that happens, the thread and thus the topic of discussion is left to that faction alone, giving the impression that everyone else agrees. There is an old legal maxim: qui tacet consentire--silence gives consent.

I must say, that it is gratifying to see that %72+ of you gave us a 7 or higher. I guess we are doing something right.

I think there is a lot that's good here, or else I would not be here to respond. I gave it a 5, because it is the average of great and terrible.

I made that point earlier. I was surprised by the number of low votes, not because people have that opinion, but because people who have that opinion would not be expected to be here to read and respond. When you ask people who are participating in an activity what they think of the activity, you should expect high scores. The people who don't like it are usually not participating.

That does not mean we should ignore problems and let them fester and grow.

Pete, there is an increasing number of people that are posting less, reading less and drifting away. You have a good thing here but but you have to listen to everyone, not just the 7 and higher raters, Don't rest on you laurels.

you can't make everybody happy, and God knows you can't make everybody happy all the time...

so ... making most people happy most of the time is about as realistic a goal as you can set... and i think ScubaBoard far exceeds that

you think PADI has it bad? for God's sake, don't go DIR ... you'll be miserable with all the comments that will be flying your way

yes, it's an internet board, and yes, they do try to keep it friendly and free of grief, but hey ... you need a thicker skin on the net that you do in real life ... it's just the nature of the beast

with over 70,000 members, somebody's bound to be offended pretty much all the time anyway... i mean, come on ...

Let me put it this way.....if I were to post "I was ripped off by a black man, and have heard of others being robbed by a black man. All black men are bad and should be avoided whenever possible", I would never hear the end of posts that I'm a racist and bigotted and should be banned, and probably would be. (rightly so)
However, change the words "black man" to LDS, and post it on Scubaboard, which would read " I was ripped off by a LDS, and have heard of others being robbed by a LDS. All LDSs are bad and should be avoided whenever possible" and no one blinks an eye. In fact, if you try to dispute it, you are attacked for not living in the real world. Why should I have to report something like this? Isn't that what the Mods are for? Why is it OK for people to post this c**p? I honestly don't believe there should be a difference in the two, that anyone posting either of those posts should reprimanded. If someone feels they were overcharged by Diveshop ABC out of Dive City, North Dakota, post it, and then we can send them an email and let them have a chance to defend themselves. If it appears they were overcharged, and the shop is price gouging, great, we can all avoid the shop. But the lumping of all dive shops into one and calling them all "the Evil Empire" by people posting has to stop. Not all dive shops are bad, and those that aren't shouldn't take the rap for those that are, any more than an entire race takes the rap for a couple of bad people.
To make a long story short, I'd just like to see more free expression of ideas, in a civil manner, with an open mind. We all don't have to agree, other than to agree to disagree, but attacking others ideas shouldn't be tolerated and needs to be better patrolled by the Mods.
Netdoc, other than than that, I still enjoy Scubaboard, and it's still a valuable resource. Thanks for all your efforts and for making this forum a reality.
