When I traveled, I brought my camera gear as carry-on. Everything else was checked. Never had a problem. Of course, I flew on major airlines: Singapore Airlines and Thai International are my favorites.

I would never analyze it to this level. I have a credit card and know how to use it! This is the kind of problem that is easily solved by throwing money at it. What a perfect excuse for buying another set of gear.

I carry on my entire dive kit minus pony and maybe minus fins (can't remember until I try again). This includes wing, ss plate, 3 mil suit, computer, regs, mask, etc. If they lose my luggage I will have most of my dive gear and no clothing, but what the hey, we must have priorities.

After drooling over your box of goodies, I came to one conclusion:
Your wife should be mad at you for buying her "inferior" gear. :-)

Why not check the pony bottle?

Also, you might want to consider bringing a carry-on with wheels for yourself.
Back injury + Pelican case holding camera stuff + box o' goodies = NSAIDs + muscle relaxant + prescription opioid

One more thought: This thread is a nice way of seeing who isn't "Ignoring" you. Which reminds me that I have to go do something... :D

In my travels around the world, I've checked everything but my computer. Haven't had any issues other than airport staff in 3rd world countries try and get "import fees" from me.
Wetsuits make great packing material to protect regs.

Nude,
I carry all my gear on. EVERYTHING goes on board with me. Why? A for sure cause rental gear can kill ya, B is a factor but not as much as A. Besides I try not to check if possible. All the clothes go in the Mrs.'s carry on. Here is another thought, check your clothes, who cares if the clothes get lost/stolen? It is cheaper to buy some shorts and t-shirts than new regs. So A. I want my stuff.

I dunno why. You don't know who will be using which gear.

Why not check the pony bottle?
Weight issues - and horror stories about people never seeing their checked pony bottle again. But, after final pack job, if my checked bag has room and weight capacity, I might.

I'm not in a position to buy much more stuff, unless it is absolutely necessary.

NSAIDs + muscle relaxant + prescription opioid
All in my carry-on bag, and will be deployed immediately after finding my seat on the plane.

If I were interested in that sort of thing I guess.

Hey ND, no hard feelings, OK!! must have misunderstood ya, thought maybe you had not been thru the drill b4 & wanted to help. I wish someone had shared a little wisdom with me a few years ago, my first trip would have went a lot smoother. I have never had anytrouble with my locks, hopefully that won't change on my next trip at the beginning of april. Anyway have fun dive safe.

Oh, no worries, mate (: I appreciate all the info I can get (:

thought maybe you had not been thru the drill b4
Yeah - I'm pretty familiar with the drill. I had to have pages added to my passport, even though it was only 4 years old. On that note - if you think TSA is obnoxious, you should try passport control in Russia...been through there 4 times. Ugh. The internal flight procedures are not much better either. They make the TSA look like a bunch of friendly boyscouts (:

You know that guy, Murphy? He's a cheap impersonator of me (:

a). I want to make sure I can use my own stuff. I will carry on the complete assembly of items to enable this goal. For example, besides carrying on my regs, I will also carry on the hoses. If I carry on a pony bottle, I will carry on everything required to use it (bracket, reg, hose, whatever).

b). I want to prevent loss (theft, misrouting, breakage or otherwise) of my expensive stuff because I don't want to have to put out the money to replace it (airline "coverage" sucks and doesn't cover much anyway).

B is most important to me for certain bits of gear as baggage insurance doesn't cover much. A is important but B definitely more so. :) So I put my regs, computer and camera in my take on luggage. Also mask and other little bits and pieces like SMB, compass, etc. They are small so I figure I may as well put as much in my take on luggage as I can. I would not take off hoses because I can't be bothered and I also have miflex hoses so they curl up well and are light. Either way works though, really.

I carry on an assembled regulator set, computer, camera (no case), mask (non prescription), skin, and swimsuit. My bc, wetsuit and fins are checked but only because they don't fit in any of my carry on bags. I carry on not because of the replacement expense but to reduce the inconvenience of lost luggage. On the return, all of my gear is checked. Is that an A selection? I have not considered breaking down the regs for easy stowage but I'll look at it and if it makes a noticeable difference, I'll try it next trip.
