I like the idea of a BC with utility pockets, or pocket shorts - but that's based more on a "be prepared" mentality than actual experience. Obviously, things that I use constantly throughout the dive or could need urgently are better attached to d-rings, bungees, etc. So that leaves me wondering - in the context of single tank recreational diving, what equipment is worth taking on the dive but is appropriate to carry in your pockets? A surface marker for drift dives immediately comes to mind...

Those items (PLB1, small flashlight, mirror & DSMB), above, except for the Dive Alert, diver knife & whistle, are in both of my BCD pockets, right below the integrated weight pouches.

on OW single tank dives I don't normally wear a pocket and prefer to pack light.

SMB is clipped to my butt d-ring, sometimes a lift bag depending on what is going on, and usually a spare double ender

I don't carry wet notes on OW dives, just use a wrist slate.

I pack light on OW technical dives as well, but will stick a spare mask, extra spool/light, and wet notes in there. If I'm wearing a pocket, the dsmb goes in there and lift bag on my butt. I have large forearms, so I try to put what I can on there

Pocket shorts carry my SMB, trauma shears, light (during daylight if I don’t think I’ll need it), spare key for my truck door, spare mask. This is for local ocean diving. I use a LiteHawk, so no real pockets on my bcd.

For easy vacation-type dives in well trafficked areas, generally nothing at all in the pocket.

SMB has its own pouch.
Knife/shears in a sheath on my waist strap.
Light is on a D-ring.

I dive with the Hydros, I don't have pockets except for weight pockets. I'm going to be buying the ninja pocket soon though. As far as using pockets I never used them when I used oth bcds.

Yes, I'm looking at BC options - some have pockets, some don't, some are optional. My initial reaction was "I have to have utility pockets", but I started to wonder as I thought about what I'd store in them... time to consult with more experienced divers :).
