While I'm sure there isn't much that's particularly noteworthy in Lane's Cove aside from the wall and pots, this thread got me wondering about something...

If someone were to find, for instance, a handfull of gold coins at the bottom of the cove, I wonder how many of the local anti-divers might suddenly take an interest in scuba. I also wonder how they'd handle the influx of speculative divers the rumor-mill would send their way.

I never had any problems at Lane's Cove. I suspect the fact that I dove it more on weekdays than on weekends had something to do with it -- the locals were at work and sober.

Last time I was there Sept. 4, and conditions were bad -- surge and terrible vis. Normally, I consider it an average dive site.

You are an evil genius, Matt! I love it.

I saw a picture yesterday of one noteworthy thing from the bottom of Lanes Cove . . . a 21 (yes as in 2 x 10 + 1 more) :11: lobster that an old dive buddy found parked there at the end of a dive a few years ago!! He did the right thing and after taking a few pictures in the surf returned this Lobzilla to a more discrete corner of the cove. But just the prospect of seeing this monster underwater - not to mention taking a few of his smaller cousins home with me - is enough to put Lanes Cove back on my short list to visit over the next few weekends!!!:eyebrow:

GMBaker and I saw/wrestled one that was possibly even bigger than that at OGB last year. With one hand on each side of the tail, there was still 3 inches between the tips of my thumbs!

Do you even dive? :)

Seriously, though, from your comments, I think you'd agree, it's just not worth any potential hassle. The dive itself is LAME. There really isn't much to see. Sure, the parking's easy, but what else does it have going for it? Lots of traps, and potentially unfriendly locals? Not even that many lobsters. Blah. Much better CA sites than this.

Can't say that it is a great dive. Not on the top of the list for sure. however, i was out with paul a few weeks ago and it was pretty interesting. We came into a hole school of dogfish (at least 50-60) that had a some cunner pinned down. They would come about 1-2 feet away from us. I never see dogfish on shore dives around cape ann, but from what i hear they frequent lane's cove. I would think that it is because of the lobster place right there and all of the bait that is isn't the area. So that dive was cool. If you want to see dogfish, it is a good place to start, but besides that, it isn't all that.

Saw ONE at Cat Rocks a month or so ago. Only one I've seen on a shore dive. Pretty cool about the school at Lane's (obviously I had NOT seen that when I went). Still, I wouldn't go there on what I consider a very off chance of seeing dogfish. Rather up the potential for a good dive, and for me that means elsewhere.

I guess my question was more about what the lobsterman might be protecting at the bottom than the actually bottom-ography. Seems the way they hassle most recreational divers that it's more likley a hitman disposal site, a lobster breading camp or like Matt suggests, a gold coin storage area. Just seems like a waste of time to hassle every (10th) recreational dive that passes that way.

Albeit i think remember hearing some "individuals" did take a bucket full of shorts out of there early in the summer/spring.

Amen Brother. I hear you and agree. If you are looking for Dogfish, probably a good place, but those things eat everything else you would like to see on a good dive, so you don't see much else. Run-on sentence complete.:lotsalove:
