I am curious as to why the LObstermen are sooo excessively sensitive about Lane's Cove. 9 times out of 10 when there is an incident replored here or even in the news it's Lanes. Makes me want to know what they are hidding there!! Or if there is some sort of "Tip Jar" for the local Fuzz? Seems you can;t even think about diving there without a ticket, missing value stems, hassle, etc. etc.

I have never had any incidents there. Once, after night dive, came to find my door open but realized I forgot to close door and lock it. Nothing was missing or gone. Never got a ticket, had key scratch. I do think not advertising I'm a diver has something to do with it and purposely have no dive flag on my car for this reason. What's under? There is a great mini-wall to see. I also like convenience of suiting up near entry point. You can pretty much dive it regardless of tide. I occasional get intimidated by some of locals with "you know you're not supposed to be diving here".. Once even by a Gloucester postal worker. Giv e me a break. I have every much right to dive there. Provided I stay within 25 yards of pot, carry flag, move my car to the legal spot...

IMO it's a really lame dive. Never had any trouble there, though. Due to it being so lame, however, I haven't been back in more than a year.

Maybe your lame. :)

I took the stores shore dive there last weekend. I would say that it is a unique site compared to others on CA, in that 1) It it nested right in an area where it looks like a lot lobstermen work and live. 2) The parking area is kind of isolated from the main road 3) There are just a ton of lobster pots right out in front of the rocks where the divers are going. I definetly felt like the locals were kind of watching our group. I don't know if I would feel comfortable parking my car and going diving for an hour, without leaving someone at the surface to watch over things. Right or wrong, just my two cents.

Do you even dive? :)

Seriously, though, from your comments, I think you'd agree, it's just not worth any potential hassle. The dive itself is LAME. There really isn't much to see. Sure, the parking's easy, but what else does it have going for it? Lots of traps, and potentially unfriendly locals? Not even that many lobsters. Blah. Much better CA sites than this.

Maybe your lame. :)

Yes! One of us swam with Whale Sharks, Humpback Whales and Hammerheads this year and one of us didn't.

Easy now boys...

In past years, I've found this to be hands down, the BEST lobstering on CA. However, in past years, I've also personally experienced having my (brother's) valve stems ripped out and a personal (nearly physical) confrontation with the nice guys in the red house.

In addition to the lobstering, it's a great night dive with a minimal swim and it's always accessible, regardless of the tides unlike Cathedral or Folly and others. I've had many great dives at this site.

All that said, it's not worth the risk. Charters all the way baby....

What is worth the risk is to take a spare junkish car and as the divers enter one person stays on the surface a distance away from the car and video tapes any vandalism to the car.

With what little free time I have, I want to spend it diving. More so, these are NOT guys you want to mess with, at least not within the confines of the hamlet we know as Lanesville. They are totally in bed with the local police and THAT I know for sure. Their own neighbors told us to keep a distance and not to bother with the local police as it would get us no where.

I don't have time to re-write my whole sob story here but if you search my old threads you will see what I mean.
