MyDiveLog:
I think "Guage Mode" is your computer's way of "sulking:" You've done something that the computer told you NOT to do (i.e. surfaced while it told you that you have a decompression obligation) so the computer basically is saying "Well, if you're not going to listen, then I'm not going to talk to you." Instead of going completely blank, it reverts to "guage mode," telling you only the depth and air pressure (if air integrated), but doesn't tell you any of the nitrogen loading information.

Not quite accurate. If you violate any computer, by diving a profile beyond the computers ability to calculate, while in computer mode it will "lock up" so as to prevent any diving for 24 to 48 hours. usually alowing access to logbook functions but not dive planning and certainly not dive functions. Gauge mode is user selected to tell the computer that the diver is using his own brain, and the computers only job is to display and record what is happening.

My vyper is 48 hours after a changeout from gauge mode - it also puts 48hrs as no-fly time.

Its to make sure no residual nitrogen remains as its got no way of calculating once back in normal mode if its been run in gauge as it doesnt know what gases you've breathed.

My computer is normally in nitrox mode but ive just finished tdi deco procedures where it was put in gauge mode for obvious reasons.

Wish it had a stop watch feature in gauge for the stops (if it has i didnt find it).

I picked the vyper because its big - its easy to see in low light/poor vis and easy to read the required information when its needed fast. I didnt want a harder to see watch type computer and definately dont want to wear my computer as a watch (and get it scratched, broken and so on). I wear a normal watch for a watch.

Yes Jimmer I worded that wrong. What I meant to say was you're locked out of dive mode and stuck in gauge mode for a min 24 hrs. Again, I don't know if that's accurate or not, just one of those things I heard somewhere.

Probably and that makes complete sense. If the computer is not calculating nitrogen exposure for a dive then trying to switch INTO gauge mode is telling the computer "Now really, how long can I stay down?" and the computer is saying "I have no idea, I wasn't paying attention. But I know you were diving 4 hours ago, so not as long as if you'd been on the surface."

KMD, that's because you're a youngster. When you're my age, you'll just be looking for the BIGGEST display you can find, and never mind how big the computer ends up being :)

Well I am quickly catching up to you age wise. I would sure wouldn't mind doing the whole lasik thing. But I just dont want to take the time off for the enforced no diving.
