Sam,

You might want to consider renting until you find what works best for you at specific temps.

I dove a 3MM Goldcore shorty and 3mm boots last year in Mexico, with water temps 78-80 degrees, and was never cold.

This year, I'm switching to a full microprene (+- 2mm) for protection. I've also picked up a beanie, which allows you to fine-tune your heat retention.

Everyone has a different tolerance to cold, so what works for one person may not work for you.

I just got back from Ohau and did 4 dives. I had a shorty on (not sure what thickness) and froze my *** off on a couple of dives. I've been back two days and I have all ready been searching LP and other places for a full suit. Personally, I would rather be to warm on a dive than cold so I may pick up a 3mm suit (maybe two piece or single). Since I live in Michian, I'm expecting my lake dives to be in a dry suit so the 3mm will serve good on my vacations. Plus I don't have to worry about who pissed in my rental. Now I can comfortable enjoy my own pee :)

I am also looking forward to the added protection. I did get pushed into the reef (current) during my last dive in Hawaii. My knee was scrapped up pretty bad. Reef Gloves and a knife are also on my top ten.

The rest of the equipment I just rented (excpet m/s/f)
