GUE Fundies

Do the fundies locally and go diving when you are on holiday.

I would consider SDI Solo Diver. I think it should be a required course included in the AOW certification. Take a look at this: https://vimeo.com/49259855

The OP is in the 25 - 49 dives range per his profile. Not sure in this case it is appropriate - 100 dives needed.

SDI Solo course requires 100 logged dives. So does PADI Self reliant. As i just did it, I would recommend NAUI Intro to tech, depending on instructor, of course (but this is true of any class). GUE-F, to me, would be too much on a few day holiday. I like NAUI approach on no pass/not pass thing, i felt i improved A LOT but also got license to practice skills i didn't know before. My buoyancy and trim was pretty good for recreational diver but it is on different level now and platform is much more stable in the water column and can withstand way more task loading (s drill and modified basic 5, that we called Fab 4 while neutrally buoyant and in trim, without varying more then 1 foot was a great practice for that) Oh, and i finally managed to move backwards in the water by only moving my legs and fins. Not good at backkick by any means after 3 days of class but I finally know how to and will improve with practice. Anyway, I am glad i didnt try to take any full tech course (well, i dont have an equipment for that yet, doubles, wing for them and regs were borrowed from the shop). Now I know I wasnt ready for tech course and either wouldn't pass or would pass half-a** class.

Yes, solo is out as I don't have the required 100 dives.

What is your reasoning for this? I have 1/2 my vacation set aside for diving, the other half would be for relaxing.

I am not GUE. Have you read about the course?

Course Content
The Fundamentals course is normally conducted over four days, requires 6 dives and at least 30 hours instruction, encompassing classroom, land drills and in-water work.

But you did say you might have the 4 days.

It isn't just a course.

And you will probably need to make some gear purchases.

GUE Fundies is pass/not pass course. If i remeber correctly, it involves couple of days of pool work and 3 days of open water or something like this. You try to do it in few days-your legs will be shot after couple of days. We did pool session one weekend for NAUI Intro and 2 days of open water the other weekend. After OW part my legs were sore for 3 or 4 days. And I run mountain trails 3 times a week for the past 3-4 years.

Oh, wait. You have (or will have) AOW but didnt say anything about Rescue. I think it is required in most tech courses.I would take it in the environment you are planning to dive the most, though. Anyway, if i were you, I would rather enjoy fun diving while on vacation and take classes at home.

I currently have aow and will be taking rescue this month.

There are 4 different grades from fundamentals IIRC:
Fail - you are an unsafe diver and need a whole lot of remediation (not common)
provisional pass - you kind of have the idea, but not enough - you can work with the instructor over the next few months to get this updated later to a pass.
rec pass - pass in a single tank, doing the skills while maintaining the trim and buoyancy to standard.
tech pass - pass with doubles, light, etc and has higher standards overall - this is the ticket to GUE tech courses.

I'm told a tech pass is not something most people can get the first time through. (Heck, I'm hoping to get close to a rec pass myself.) Any fundamentals instructor can work on you with a tech upgrade once you have a rec pass. Provisional pass upgrades need to be with your actual instructor.
