Isn't the standard trick to deploy a yellow DSMB with a slate attached to it, and have a spare pony cylinder ready to go on the boat with bolt snap attached? That way the skip can clip the pony to the line and send it down to you..

Then again maybe I'm barking up the wrong tree... Wouldn't be the first time - above comment not from direct experience, more from too many hours listening to experienced divers debating stuff over beers.

wow. this is crazy...someone actually said that if you're not trained to grab another tank and descend again you shouldn't do it. You're killing me. If that is something that requires training, then that means it's something that should be done. Why else would anyone need training to do it if it's a bad idea? How can decompressing be a bad thing to do? Hell, then why do deco stops at all. Just surface, suck O2, and take a trip to the chamber...You got DAN don't you?
That's like saying that because you haven't received CPR training, you're going to let the person die instead of doing chest compressions....

all4scuba05, I think the training comment was geared more towards training to deco diving, which does require training. And the logic follows that if you were trained to deco dive, you probably wouldn't be in that situation.

unfortunately that the same as saying that if you're trained to dive you shouldn't be in any situation either. Training only keeps MOST people out of situations. The rest get into situations that they were already trained to avoid.

that is, if you are trained, your chances of getting into that situation
to begin with are less than the chances of someone who is not trained.

You have the question of how deep to do the stop and how long? If you needed to do an omitted deco stop, how would you do it?

an omitted deco stop is an omitted deco stop even if you weren't trained to deco dive. If all you have is OW, and somehow you ended up deco diving but don't deco stop because of lack of air, its called omitted deco stop. Just because you're not "trained to do it" doesn't mean you should have skipped it.
