vol.1, issue 1 of Diver's (The Real World of Diving) magazine.

Haven't seen this before, it's a glossy, high-priced ($8.95/copy!) periodical. Well, after a quick thumb-thru, it appears to be a hybrid between Stroke Divers Quarterly and Penthouse.

Gotta feeling this one will quickly be following Skin Diver's path....

Ha Ha Ha:D I love it! Stroke Divers Quarterly.

I had no idea how bad this thing was until I saw a copy. Great paper...um...yeah, the paper is really nice...can't give much more positive feedback.

Is the guy on the front cover in need of assistance? He seems to be completely entangled in some sort of hoses, electrical gear and suicide clips. Perhaps it's a preview of next months issue on entanglment rescue techniques?

What's the guy on page 66 doing? Is he having an embolism or something

Final comment...Fromage 100%

Thanks, Cyclon, that was my hearty laugh of the day. :-)

I can't stand the SCUBA magazines out there. Some of the physiology articles are very informative but, the rest of it is a joke. If you pick up a copy of Roadale's, you can easily find numerious mistakes and pictures of the most insane gear ever designed. They arn't really setting good examples for new divers.

"Stroke Divers Quarterly" - Classic line.

However, combine SCUBA (DIR, no strokery allowed :)) and Penthouse and I just might buy that magazine.

:out:

It would appear the publishers of the new magazine have identified a niche they feel they can fill. If ya don't like it, don't buy it. But diving is still predominantly male (despite how much we wish it weren't) and fortunes have been made following the truism "sex sells". (I can't remember the name of the company but the only ad I can recall from most of the other dive mags is the one for the commercial diving school that uses page-tall, thin ads with a fine female form on them - the ad may be offensive to some but it works).
They clearly don't wanna be a Rodale's publication, or one that tows the line and prints only what their advertizers tell them they can. I have to applaud them for the effort, appreciate the money they must have behind it to start out with that kind of printing quality, and hope that they start putting in a little more substance.
Strokes still outnumber DIR-types, and likely always will, so that is not exactly a limiting factor for their magazine (not looking to get into a flame war here, but look at all the new divers and how few are taught DIR from the beginning.)

Another magazine with a short life expectancy!

Here is a request from thier web site, a couple of sample pics show a girl with half her bikini and the other in all her bikini.

The only skin I see on the ladies that I dive with is what is visible between thier mask and hood. This is fine with me, now they are real divers!!

Got what it takes to be a Local Girl?
Then show us some pictures and tell us a little about yourself. Submit a brief self-description including what you do, why you're doing it, your dive and travel experience, and anything else we might find interesting.

Send sample photos in the form of negatives, 8"x10" glossies, or high resolution images on disc. Don't forget contact information including your name, address, phone number, and e-mail. Include SASE for return of materials.

All the Local Girls will appear in our special November-December 2003 issue. Readers will then vote online for their favorite Local Girl to determine the Local Girl of the year.

Here's where I think we have a problem, I don't think anyone would disparage a new entry into the scuba publication business. Read carefully the editorial statement at the front of the magazine and the letter/response from the Navy diver...they clearly state that they want to address the problems of the scuba industry and in their own words "do it right". They then go on to slam the president of DUI who indicated her distaste at the "sex sells" factor of the new magazines media kit, show photos of people definitely "doing it wrong" and putting in several full page spreads of T & A with NOTHING to do with diving (and a model search contest).

Not only does the media distort the message, the message that they claim they are trying to make is totally nullified by their choice of photos.

Try again:bonk:

never mind the curious content. I'm all for any new dive rags to compete with the lame stuff presently available, but this one isn't going to enjoy any longevity.

If they have identified a niche to fill, who is their target audience...burly guys in their 20s with shaved heads? I counted at least nine examples of this 'look'...

And why is a dive mag featuring photos of climbing, rafting, snowboarding...

bwerb, the guy on p. 66 caught my eye, too...what IS he doing?? I'd offer some ideas, but the regulators would pull my post.

I'm definitely keeping the one issue I have and will offer it on eBay in 20 years as a collectable piece in the Arcane Dive Literature section.

This is truely an awesome magizine. I'm starting to carry it in my shop.

On the shelves out front, or in the rack by the bathroom?

;)
