Not coming back to be there for my wife.

the only fear I have is my dive buddy is far away when my equipment fails but am getting better about it. I am thinking of getting a pony tank in the future. Sharks. Nah.

I had to think about this one for a while, because I have a number of "worries". But a bunch of them boil down to this: I'm afraid of moving water. Water is massive and powerful and much stronger than I am, and if it wants to move me, it does. I'm afraid of being swept away from the entry or the boat by current, and I'm afraid of up and downwellings (been in both), and I'm very nervous about surf.

...and moving water pushing me into a gill net that some a$$hole left in the cut. More of a freediver's nightmare but that's a bad one.

Can't think of anything I'm that afraid of meeting in the water creature-wise -- as others here my greatest fear is something happening to my buddy, who 99% of the time is my fiancee. Mostly because I don't want anything to happen to her, but also because before our first dive trip her mother (a CSI) emailed me to let me know she had the expertise to hide the pieces of my body in places nobody would ever find them should anything happen to her.

My biggest fear in diving is that my wife will find out how much I spend on dive gear.

Propellers and down-currents. I have been in a couple of down-currents, one that took me from 10 meters to 30 meters before it spit me out. It was kind of fun, actually--because I had the gas for it.

I have two. 1) sharks believe it or not. The one coming out of nowhere..

2) strong current that could carry us well away from the dive site and to where SHARKS could have us for a snack, or to be stranded in open ocean.

Seriously, those are the two fears I have.

So I know that the #1 fear everyone seems to have when they first come to class is SHARKS! However, I'm curious how many out there fear them or some other creature. For me, I am scared to death of Humbolt Squid or any large squid-like creature...all because of a VERY bad night dive in La Paz that ruined me for life...stupid squid fisherman.

Yet I have been swimming with many different species of sharks without incident...including even a great white...though by accident and not in a cage...and hopefully never again. :)

I think its interesting to hear what fears people have and why as it can help the rest of us make smarter decisions for our dives...like not diving around squid fishermen in La Paz at night...or carry an extra set of cutters or shears because you got caught up in fishing line or cables...etc.

Of my dive buddies:
one fears fishing line because he got caught up in it pretty bad and dropped his only knife...thus why he carries at least 2 no matter what now and makes sure his dive buddy is close at hand.
2 are scared of running out of air (one did by sheer stupidity and the other had a free flow that dumped his air) now one carries a pony and the other dives with a steel 100 vs my steel 80.
the rest either are scared of sharks, or some other creature...or decline to tell me.

I don't mean to scare anyone with the topic...I just find it interesting to hear and think others might like to know that they aren't alone either....

I know it was said but, for me it also would be the fear of not being able too dive. After a recent back injury and surgery and a 4 month recuperation I'am ready too hit the waters again, believe you me that was one of the concerns I had on my mind....
