And to tie it all in, and get us back on beer, Riggwelter, from Black Sheep Brewery in Yorkshire, UK.

Conveniently, both! Good stuff.

I will have to try it.

English beer though, I don't know about you. Thought you were more of a full-blooded American than that.

Actually I thought the phrase was red-blooded American, to differentiate us from those green-blooded Canadians like DCBC.

I finally noticed Arrogant Bastard this weekend in the store but didn't get it...$17 for a six pack! Next time I'll try it, but it'll take 2 visits to get past the sticker shock.

Hop a flight from Philly to Charlotte and go to Duckworth's on 10/6. 40 different brews from Stone Brewing (including Arrogant Bastard) and the CEO will be there to answer questions.

It's OK to drink English Beer on occaision. I think the White House has taken on the job of alienating the Brits - because they are so good at it. And the Brits have a longer brewing tradition than us full/red-blooded folks. But for newcomers, we still do a pretty good job when we want to!

Wrybosome - When I lived in PA, you could buy up to 2 6 packs in a bar, or beer by the case at a beer distributor. This seems to really cut down on your opportunity to try different brews, but clearly you have found many gems. Do you simply cross the state line (with DE and NJ moments away) or has PA changed the law, or some other method?

SC - the arcane, antiquated and idiotic laws for adult beverages in PA persists. Follow this logic, if you can... One can purchase up to 2 six packs in an establishment that has more then 30% of sales in non-alcoholic beverages and food. There is a limit on # of ounces as well which I don't recall. One can purchase cases of beer at the 'Beer and Soda Distributor' where they sell only beer and soda. Wine and spirits are offered via the 'Wine and Spirits' store where my selections are limited to what the PLCB (Pa Liquor Control Board) see fit to stock. The folks running and staffing the PLCB stores are State Employees, with all the personality (or lack thereof) and subject matter knowledge befitting someone with a third grade public school education who wants to put in their time and retire with benefits out the :mooner:. They make the folks at Drivers License Centers look like Rhodes scholars. Sunday hours are a recent phenom. No bar or restaurant can stock or sell any beverage that does not come through the PLCB and appear on a list. Just ask Georg Perrier (proprietor of Le Bec Fin) about the cases of French wine confiscated or witness the recent raid at one of our Belgian (I believe) Pubs where kegs of beer were seized because the agents couldn't read the names on the approved beers list.

For a state facing a bond default, this system needs to be scrapped and tax revenue generated from a free market approach. Luckily I live about 5 miles over the DE border where free market and tax free shopping reign. Total Wine, the size of a typical grocery store, carries per their website 8,000 wines; 2,000 spirits and 1,000 beer selections including REAL beers from countries like Canada, Belgium, Germany, England, Czech. I can buy beer by the bottle plus get the 750 ml bottles of stuff like Chimay (YUM!).

Hi Jersey! :wavey:

When are we going diving??

The logic behind PA liquor laws is simple...it started after prohibition as a way to discourage liquor sales. Now it's maintained by an unholy alliance between state employees, small religious groups, and MADD. Every gov that's tried to change it has failed.

If whales are nervous then I'm impressed.

You do know how to circumcised a whale don't you?
You use 4 skindivers

Hi Wry! Looking at calendar - I graduate November 21! (Currently on academic probation despite a 96 cum due to missing a day so no days off for me.) T has been working hard on his diving every weekend and rewarding me with lobsta (last was 6 pounds) and fish. Was thinking about taking a mid week trip to the Springs...will let you know if I can get away. Aware of the history behind PA, but for a state in economic hardship (see today's Inky for the bond default in H-burg) privatization is a no brainer. Licenses generate immediate revenue and the taxes generate on on-going revenue stream. Fewer nasty employees on the state rolls, reduce the real estate leased and other budget reductions I'm sure. I thought Jon Newman was the guy to turn the tide, but PLBC/Fast Eddie threw him under the proverbial bus. I'd prefer to spend my money in my home state, but they don't want my business...goin home to grill a steak and suck down a Magic Hat #9 or two!
