I've been to or past 100 FSW on several dives now and am taking the Nitrox now...I'm not planning on taking "deep" I was just wondering what the use of the deep course was, since it seems like you could take the AOW and just apply that knowledge to do dives from 100-130.

Ontario Diver:
Under PADI rules - anything over 60' is deep.

Junko - What kind of diving do you want to do? The PADI Deep course is only as good as its instructor. Some shops do a good or great job and some treat it like a money maker. If I recall correctly, three of the four dives have to be below 60 feet (65 is fine) and only one has to be below 80 ft. Make sure you are getting what you want out of the course.

If you do want to explore deep diving, I would be suggesting that Nitrox would be a better start and then perhaps look into some technical training.

I am also questioning the validity of doing the deep dive specialty. I did an adventure dive in "deep" for my AOW but officially i am only allowed to go up to 30m. But I have done many dives that are around 35m. Guess its really a money making gimmick or if u really plan to go for master scuba diver.

I only have OW, but I registered 62' on one of my last dives. I'd like to tell you is was real scary and challenging, but in fact, it was very similar to 59' 11" only 25" deeper.

You gotta push the envelope if you're wanna improve. I'm planning dive to 64' this weekend!

Our deepest dive was 67 feet. That was scary, but largely because we were lost (went from 55 to 67 on our way "back" to shore), the vis suddenly went bad, and our ascent was blocked by about a thousand blasted sea nettles. Going to 63 at Tahoe, I have to say, wasn't more thrilling than going to 59 (or 30 or 15), but it did get us nicely chewed out by my mother (former AI) once we got back to shore for blowing our dive plan. Heh heh.

The real fear over 60 is listening for the sirens of the sinister Scuba police!

Going to 100+ with the very same equipment you were taught to use at 30 ft (except for the hang bottle which you may not be able to get to).
Advanced gas management techniques like "look at your gauge really often now cuz your deep!"
Kneeling to look at squashed plastic bottles and colored pieces of neoprene.

Come on now. How could any one consider diving deep without training like that? It would be a bargine at 1/2 the price...or maybe if you could get 2 for the price of three or something.

what you should do is find an instructor who will do an extra couple of dives on top of your AOW, do a couple of deep ones and then you get both AOW and Deep Speciality..:D

On my Deep Dive Specialty I went down to a 999ft with a single HP80. I had to take two lights with me because it was so dark. My instructor was breathing off my octo, since he was diving a cheap regulator and it started to freeflow (thank god I have an APEKS). I had to open a combination lock at depth and wright the ABC backwards on my slate. Unfortunatley I was to narked to do either...........if my instructor wasn't there, I would not have been here. Thanks PADI.

Any of the PADI specialties can be a fun learning experience or it can be a waste of time and money. Once again it becomes a function of the instructor not the training agency. I do think its a very good idea to get some additional training before diving deeper than 60'. One thing that seems to escape people is what is deep. My definition of deep is where: Your gas supply becomes more limited because it is consumed faster, your deco obligation becomes greater and most important swimming to the surface is no longer an option. Overhead environments are most troublesome because we no longer can make a direct ascent, deep diving(deeper diving) creates the same problem just as full deco dives do. Even though we can look up and see the surface we can't just swim up if the s*@t hits the fan.
As Mike F. indicated a typical "Deep" class doesn't get into the material that a person should consider. gas mgmt., problem solving and dealing with NN, along with gear config. lights, planning, etc. etc. etc.
Can you get this in a PADI Deep Specialty-Sure you can-If Mike was still teaching PADI you'd might have gotten it from him and I do teach it-but I go into gas mgmt. etc in my OW course.
Can you teach yourself -maybe-is diving deeper and deeper teaching you anything or are you gaining any skills-I doubt it
One of the dumbest things I continue to hear and read is- "I went to 95' and I didn't have any problem"
What I have yet to hear or read is " I went to 95' and the s*@t hit the fan, but I fell back on my training and because I was properly equipped and prepared we worked through the problem and here I am."
Diving deeper and deeper thinking that you're gaining experience and skill without any actual training is poor thinking on the divers part. Get additional training from someone who truly knows what they are doing. You will beat the learning curve, a curve that sometimes can be harsh-M

And I could have done it if Joe Rogan hadn't been screaming at me the whole time...

It is required if you don't want to get flamed by the cyber divers on the board who know everything, each and every time you say you dove to 130ft.
