I'm not talking about using your head or buddy awareness.

What I want to know is: Of the basic skills (navigation, kicks, air sharing, bouyancy etc...) what is the most important skill for a diver to master?

Buoyancy, in my humble opinion.
If one can't stabilize one's self, then one can't help another, so forth and so on . . .

I don't really thin you can get ver good at any of the other skills until you get a handle on buoyancy control and trim.

You just can't do a good job at propulsion if you aren't in the correct position. It's hard to navigate if you're sinking or rising everytime you change speed or stop kicking. Air sharing is pretty tough if you can't hold your depth and position while you do it. You won't ever have an easy time staying with and aware of a buddy if you can't control your position in the water or it takes all your focus to do so.

That's why I say that buoyancy control and trim is the foundation that all the other skills are built on and that training methods that put it last are backwards.

Buoyancy.

Being efficient in the water will also go a long way toward building confidence and comfort in the water for the beginning diver, as well as freeing up some of their attention away from struggling with buoyancy/trim, toward practicing other important skills.

Another vote for Buoyancy.

It all ties together. For better air consumption, you need to be relaxed, comfortable and kicking efficiently. Until you've got a grip on your buoyancy you won't really be comfortable and relaxed, and won't be finning as well as you could be.

Buoyancy. It's a good thing.

Buoyancy control. Hands down.

What about by dropping to ones knees on the bottom, no bouyancy required there.:D
I'm being sarcastic of course. Yes I agree, bouyancy control.

You basically can't do anything unless you are stable.

Jack Nicholson has had a fine career predicated on the idea that stability is overrated.

:wavey: I vote for buoyancy, too.
