I am a beginner vacation diver who has only dived 50 times. I am planning to buy light/s for scuba diving either for getting a decent still photo for dives up to 25 m or for night dives. For info, I have not done the night dives yet. I am not planning to spend too much money yet since I only dives most likely twice a year (if I am lucky). Thanks a lot beforehand.

I also was looking for under $50 backup simple light.
Found good deal ($47) for this light.
First flooded after about 4 dives during Flower Garden boat trip, replacement also flooded after about 3-4 dives during Cozumel trip.
I just kept it as backup, didn't turn on.
Now I am going to return it again to -leisurepro- (lifetime warranty !) and will ask to add money and take other light, now recommended by my instructor.

DGX 600 @ $50. I have 2 and they are my cave backup lights. You will not get more than 50min out of them which is fine by me.

uugh,
hate to be a party pooper. im the ultimate cheapskate. if i dont have to spend for it, i wont. With dive lights, you might as well buy a good one once, verses dealing with 3 floods. light and motion make a good product. you can also justify it as an around the house emergency light.

a sola 500 is around 250.00, and wlll have good resale value down the road.
its hard to reccomend a $50 light that you would be happy with, longterm.

The $50 DGX light have triple o-rings and rated to 600ft as standard. I have dived them down to 300ft without issue. Flooding will most likely be user error. They come with Lithium Ion batteries and charger.

The DGX is really the only light in that price range worth considering but you're not going to be able to use it for photography because it is a very narrow beam. The BX-1 from Dive Rite is a bit more versatile since it can use AA's or 18650's which is nice, but it is $75 instead of $50
BX-1 Handheld Light - Dive Right in Scuba

For video spot heads which are required for good photographs and videos, and if you're doing night diving the wildlife will certainly appreciate it, you are limited to these, but they aren't cheap
Hog Morph Backup Light - Dive Right in Scuba
Impact Stubby Dive Light - Dive Right in Scuba

While the Hog is a bit more expensive, it does have multiple power settings which is quite nice, and on low it can be used at the surface

Roman, that Scubapro is a complete ripoff btw
Dive Rite BX-1 Handheld Light LT6640
That is less than half the price, uses the same LED module, and while it only burns for 2.5-3 hours unlike the Nova that burns for 10, you can use AA batteries or 18650's which are rechargeable saving money over time, they are much easier to pack for travel, and the Dive Rite is 5 inches long instead of 9 which is just excessive for a dive light....

+ 1 more for the DGX600. It's not only the best torch for under $50, but arguably just one of the best torches out there and by far the best value. I picked up one of these about 2 months ago, and I can't stop talking about it, and neither can everyone that dives with me. Was on a rebreather night dive earlier this week, at depth, and my buddies were sporting all kinds of different lights. The talk after the dive was not about how great of a dive we had, but "what light is that and where did you get that thing" !?!?! I've got 2 more on the way. Not to mention, you can "hammer nails" with this thing.

i will sound like a broken record but i also recommend the dgx 600. i just bought two with the wrist mounts. 50 bucks including the battery and charger. i have looked around quite a bit and if this light performs as the specs say, it will easily be the best value out there. just picked them up yesterday so haven't used them.
they look basically the same as the scuba pro nova 700r. i saw this one last week and it was a great little light. but it was around 400 bucks i believe with the battery and charger.
the other one i was considering was the dive right in scuba stubby. very good customer service too

dgx customer service was awesome btw.

For ultimate cheapskates: Lerway 800lm Lumen CREE XML T6 LED Waterproof Underwater Diving High light Lamp 18650 Flashlight Torch - gopro -- they used to sell the 18650 version plus the battery plus a junk charger for about $8 back when the battery alone was around $5. Not anymore, it seems.

Fits in BCD pocket, bright enough for a backup, can't beat the price. (Assuming "beginner diver" means 40m max depth -- it's only rated to 50m so rec. use only.)
